I currently run and Caterham R500 for fast road runs out. Its handles brilliantly and gives massive highs. However I don't get the chance to drive it enough due to weather and family. I therefore want a cerb for fast road use and take the family out in very occassionally. It will be a 3rd car but will get used most weekends in the summer.

I have seen a lovely speed 6 at Tony's HHC but wondered whether I would miss the AJP experience. The engine had already been rebuilt so I wondered whether there were any power upgrades without needing a full rebuild? The later speed 6 engines have more power in s form and therefore I wondered whether this was just due to top end modifications with the same bottom end.

There seem to be a few cars with choice upgrades ie brakes, dampers. What would you guys recommend doing to a standard car for fast road use. ie nitron's, lsd, camber changes, brakes?

I have trawled the internet but I am worried about chassis condition. Anyone on here know of/selling a top spec thats had some of the above work done? Willing to pay up to £25k or may swap the R500 if someone wants a sub 7 seconds 0-100 monster!

Hi - good luck with the search, enjoy!
There are very few if any power raising upgrades to a S6 engine once its been rebuilt afaik.
The S6 is built to comfort spec eg higher profile tyres, softer suspension... So unless it has been tweaked it may need more money spent on in than an equivelant AJP to get 'fast road' spec.
A 4.5 is likely to come with better brakes than 4.2 or S6 (certainly pre 01 cars).
Cerbs didnt come with Red Rose or S version S6's although I am sure they are out there.
With 25K budget you can buy the pic of the range with all the mods!
Personally I would advise to buy a late car with all the stuff done that you like.

Any thoughts on rebuilding just the topend for more power. ie porting the existing head, cams etc?

Personally what I'd do.

1. Check all the standard stuff is fine, coolant hoses/pipes, tappets, TPs and fuel lines.
2. Replace suspension bushes if necessary.
3. Change to Steve Heath ARB drop links.
4. Fit Nitrons.
5. Fit Quaife ATB diff.
6. Stick it back on 16s if the wheels have been changed.

It seem to are about to change emphasis.

A normal car and a caterham is for normal petrolheads.

When you come on this forum after a while of reading posts you will realise that a caterham doesn't cut it anymore for your thrill seeking pleasure hehe

From a thread that happened a few months ago where everyone declared their other vehicles it seems to be the normal round here is Cerb AJP as the runabout and a 0-60 in about three second sportsbike for when the Cerb seems a bit slow.

  • Make sure everything is spot on with the car
  • Decent dampers/springs
  • corner weight
  • decent tyres all round (R888's if you're more of a fair weather fast driver)
  • Quaife ATB
  • Remap
  • short induction

In that order too... smile

Seen a lot of mentions for the quaife ATB. Is it really that good?
