Is it me pots?
Discussion
The story goes...
My '98 4.5 goes in for service - tuned nicely - felt like a new car. 200 mile later spluttering like mad so back in.
Tuned again - 150 miles later driving like a pig. In again - when it came out drove like a dream.
Now 100 miles later undrivable. Around town at 2000 to 3000 absolutely nothing happens when I floor it - at 3000 bang - kick in the back and we're off! At traffic lights it cuts out (never done that before). Open road when 'on song' it seems fine but drop below 3000 - as above.
HELP!

You should be able to check the pots with the software (or the garage where you take it too can do that). Readings from both pots should stay the same all the way up to full throttle.
My understanding is that you cant 'tune' the engine, you can only reset the ecu adaptive values. From what it sounds like, the garage is resetting the adaptive values evertime you go in and over the next 100 or so miles the values are getting derived again by the ECU. ..... comments anyone
If you cant get the software, I would watch them 'tune' the car and ask them to show you both the throttle percentage values as you press the pedal. The other thing to check is the throttle linkage which is another common fault. I have just replaced this on my 98,4.5. If this is loose, you can normaly see one bank of butterflies open before the other or close before the other on the way back. Joolz does a modification to reduce this slack.
I would check the above two things before suspecting anything else.

Sounds like poor setup. you need the airflow between the banks balanced. Could also be any number of things, throttle spindle bushes, lambadas, cats, water temp sensor?? You need to get the car plugged into the computer, as this will save a lot of pissing about.
Also check if the dealer is just resetting the adaptive maps each time, as this will give a temp cure for any of the above faults.
Note that not all dealers know how to set up the AJP!
Darren.

had exactly the same problem, but here in guernsey there are no dealers, we thought it might have been rain blowing into engine and electrics, so was advised by jersey dealer to stick it in the garage for a while with the central heating on, after a week it was still the same so a fellow cerb owner and i spent one sat morning changing spark plugs, cleaning electical contacts on the throttle pots, and ecu. put it all back together--perfecttt!!!!
give it a try contact cleaner spray is after all a cheap potential answer
