Starter motor refurb costs.

I popped in to my local refurb place last week as my starter is playing up. He quoted £130 to have it reconditioned. I was rather shocked at this he then did say it might work out to be lower. (obviously sensing he might have just lost a costumer lol)

I was wondering what prices others have been charged?

you can but the refurb kit of Clever trevor for around £50 and i guess around a hours labour at least to do the job so i would guess around the £90-100 mark would sound right

£130. Bargain, they are a bit of a pig compared with the average unit and that's still half the price of a new one.

I posted in equiv parts a guy on ebay who sells tilton refurb kits for £50 and can offer refurbed starters.

Exactly!! I think after the look of shock on my face he said It might be less as also I had explained it was 'squealing' so guess its the clutch so maybe he thought he could just do that part.

I only have the nissan maxima starter on mine is the tilton not a more uprated version? and would the parts be compatible?

Dont matter which version you have..i was told i had the better one after it was refurbed & it still packed up in under a year!

So i decided to just order a new starter motor gearbox myself @ £50 & fit it myself.

I have been told by a specialist they are just a weak point & your either lucky or not just depends.

Parts £50, some labour, insurances, rent, taxes etc... £130 sounds cheap to me even if they simply lick it clean.

The gear/clutch assembly is £50 alone. I did mine myself, it was squealing for a month or two then packed up totally.
Changing the gear assembly is easy, removing the starter from the car is not quite so quick but still only a couple of hours graft.

Where did you get the gear assembly from? and would the Tilton one be compatible?
I know taking the starter off is a pain in the backside I have done it before but not messed with the gears/clutch on a starter before.

I bought mine from here aswell & swapping the clutch/gearbox is straight forward after you have removed the starter from the car,just undo four screws remove old part,clean & regrease & fit new clutch/gearbox.

I recieved good service from them also when i phoned them, cos internet was playing up.

I just called them up. Very helpful man on the phone.
He wasn't sure if the tilton part was compatible with the nissan maxima starter but said if I email him as much info as possible he would look into it and maybe work out a different part for it if necessary.
Also said it was fairly easy part to change.

Trouble is it's getting a race against time now as he wont be in 'till monday and my starter is getting harder and harder to engage 4 attempts on average now :-o

If anybody has any info on the nissan starter it would be much appreciated. What I have so far is Nissan Maxima 3.0 Inj Auto 88-94.

He also said they are working on a whole range of starters for TVR's which is good

Just to let you know, and those who read this in the future that this clutch/gear assembly is compatible with the Nissan Maxima starter motors.
And it is dead easy to swap over.. 3 small screws to remove the end plate then 4 small screws to remove the gear assembly. :-)
