Diagnostic software?

My engine management light has come on. I've read somewhere about some diagnostic software to read fault codes - how easy/expensive is it to get hold of this? Where can I get the software? What hardware would I need (laptop with serial port? cable?).

The software can be downloaded from the net. Try here You will need a cable as the link shows- a simple serial cable is not recommended as the pinout used is a little strange and depending on which ECU version you have, it may not have a 9 pin D type connector at all.

The correct cable has a couple of resistors soldered in which stop the ECU from behaving strangely when the diagnostics are plugged in. Like not starting the engine strange. A lot depends on what the PC does with the serial port pins but it can have some weird effects.

If you have a USB only laptop then it will work with the right USB to Serial adapter.

In terms of where to get the cable ready made, I have the cable complete with both the three pin external and internal 9 pin and a suitable usb adapter from here

Personally I have run the software on Windows 98ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP on Pentiums from 300mHz to 2Ghz.

I think mine may be in this group i have had a quick look at the ECU and cant see the 9 pin port any where, has any one got a photo of where it is. i have read the service manual and i am still not too clear on its where abouts?

Its a 99 4.2 if that any help

its inside the ecu. if you take the four small bolts out and remove the lid it will be in the middle of the circuit board.

I'm also working on an external 3 pin flying lead to go inside the loom plug so that you don't have to take the cover off.
