Do not ever touch the silver key in the cubby hole, it can cause more trouble than it's worth. It basically kills all power to ignition circuits I think.

You can put the immobiliser key into the black slot in the cubby hole instead of using the button on the key fob if you are inside the car and the immobiliser times out or if the battery is flat in your key fob once you've gained access into the car.

Regards

Simon

The only time(s) I have had to use the immobiliser slot in the cubby hole (rather than the alarm 'plipper') has been on NorfolkLine ferries. Their ship's radar has a thing for messing up my immobiliser/plipper.

Oh, and just to add... DON'T TOUCH THE SILVER KEY hehe

Hmmm, strange. I have to use the immobiliser slot under the radio every time. I just thought this was SOP.

I used the slot in order to drive the car away from POP as I couldn't understand what the Salesman had said about the start-up procedure.

The next, and last, time was when the car wouldn't start at all.
Didn't work !
Only thing that saved me was TURNING THE SILVER KEY OFF and ON . Everything was fine after that

There's an alarm system on the old Steam museum in Swindon that kills the immobiliser, very embarrassing when you've pulled up to take pics of your car against the graffiti.

Castle Coombe, at Quarry, under the powerlines, has the same effect.

Using the slot fires the car up every time.

That explains, I've had the same thing with my Chim on a P&O ferry once.

For added security i use the silver key loads of times and keep it with me, never had a problem with using and removing it.

why do people suggest not to use it ?

Because it is not a proper key but a cheapo lock like the sort you might find on a swimming pool locker. They have been known to fall apart or become dislodged thus immobilsing the car.

Cant be that bad as alarm company's used to use them before keypads become the norm.

Originals fitted to the Cerb were the cheapest of the cheap versions, many will have been upgraded to better quality units by now.
