3k running cost?

hi, i am seriously looking a purchasing a 4.2 car.
my insurence quote is coming to 315 a year ..
i am suprised by figures of 3000 pounds up keep for this car..
can this be right?
if a gear box rebuild can cost about 500 pounds, shock at 500 per corner, exhaust, clutch ,etc how often do the same items need changing!!!
i tend to get through 2-3 cars a year esp over summer ..AMG, Ferrari, Maserati, Aston. not one in my 15 years of driving, including servicing has come close to this figure...
am i being nieve? or do we only hear the scare stories ..

If you do all your own work then you can cut that figure down to a half, even a third.
The thing is, you'll probably find that one year, the clutch goes, so there is £500 for the part, £500 for labour. Then servicing for that year.
Another year you might find you want to replace the shocks, £500-£1k for the parts, then another couple of hundred for fitting. Might as well fit new bushes while you're at it too, so there's another £500 in parts, another few hundred in labour. Once you've done all that you'll need to set up the suspension geometry and corner weights; another £200-300.
Next year, fuel lines need replacing. Not a huge amount in parts, but they're a bugger to get to, so labour is expensive, another few hundred pound, plus this year is the 12k service, so probably close to £1k for that too.
Add on a set of tyres every 1-2 years at £200-300. Brakes all round can be £600+ for the discs, another £200 for pads.
Another year you might think you're seats are looking quite tatty, along with the steering wheel, another £1k gone.
Another year your outriggers might need repainting, or worse, replacing. Another £1-2k.
Another year it's the clutch slave, or master. Another year it's the steering rack that needs a rebuild along with maybe the UJs needing replacement. Another year the calipers need a rebuild because the nipples have seized and broken off (again). Another year you need a new immobiliser because the ECU for the META system has broke. Another year you repaint the front because of all the stone chips.
OK, a number of those aren't "service" items, but most Cerbera owners think of them all as necessary things to carry out from time to time in order to keep the Cerbera collective in as good a condition as possible.

A lot of it comes down to luck - I've had 2 Chims over the last 10 years which cost peanuts to run - a friend of mine has spend over 4k on engine related problems though in his chim 400. My Tuscan on the other hand has cost me a fortune in the last 2 years with the usual Speed 6 grumbles. From what I hear the AJP engine has a reasonable rep so you may be lucky - just make sure you have a "contingency fund" or buy a car with recent clutch/rebuild/shocks - yes you'll pay more in one go but the running cost should be at the lower end of the spectrum.

I wonder if the Cerb will disappoint as an ownership experience,if you flit from car to car as often as you do.Being the age and low volume production car a Cerb will now be,a high degree of patience and tolerance of its foibles is necessary,I
think only an enthusiast/obssessive/masochist will put up with the inevitable lows to go with the great highs. If you prefer surfing from car to car,you will be better off with the kind of vehicles you have owned in the past,hope this is of some help.

last couple of cars i have had have been getting more and more 'basic' ,as i am finding that all the cars are more or less the same after a while.
after driving a friends TVR last year, no abs, no airbags, no abc, etc etc and the brute power ...all under YOUR control has a large part into me searching for a cerbera( oh yes 2 small kids as well)

when bought correctly, i loose very little money on my cars..if each car cost me £3k per year , you are right, i would have more money then sense.
but then the 1/2 the fun of owning a car is finding out about it ,the chase, the purchase ..
the last thing anyone would want is a 2 smile purchase..
