Thinking of taking the plunge Help?
Discussion
Hi all HELP!
I currently own an early 5l chim which i have had for 18 months. It hasn't exactly been trouble free but has cost me around £2500 to run during this time. Now very sorted almost reluctant to move on.
I am now considering Buying a cerbie due to expanding family and wife a bit pXXXXXX Off when i continully comment I wish I was in the TVR on our family days out.Anyway Thiking of spending late teens to early twentys. Spiders important as are Headlamp conversions as I really wanted a Tuscan but the same problems that apply with the chim. Not enough seats to keep the wife happy and to give me the chance to use it.
What do I buy? 4.2 or 4.5 what are the differences in performance noise and running costs.
Who is the best source for these used Rob ingleby last tie around.
Look forward to joining the clan

You could at least keep the top-off fun of the Chim for the summer?
4.2 & 4.5 have the same noise & running costs. Performance is nearly identical - unless you're over 100mph, there's nothing noticeable in it. Driving characteristics will vary loads from car to car - earlier cars will be much more raw... best to keep driving different ones till you find one that's a good fit for you. 4.5 will cost more initially, but will also sell for more, so the costs'll work out identically in the end.
Early 20s will buy you a much newer/more refined car than late teens - I just sold my V reg 4.2 for £23k, so you can get quite a bit for your money.
Rob Ingleby will help you find a good Cerb, I'm sure, as would James Agger (jamer on PH).
So James, how much for a late (Oct) '98 4.2 with:
Full TVR Service History (apart from the last one at Joolz 3 months ago and tappets 2k miles ago)
18" Spiders just refurbed with new s03's
Front and rear headlight conversion
Pearl Paint
Green cone filters
Private Plate
New Clutch and master cylinder
Focal/Keywood custom ICE with Amp
Nitrons all round
Just (500 miles ago) engine setup
Give us a clue?

Depends how quickly you want to sell, and whether privately/to a dealer.
Personally, I'd take the Nitrons off (assuming you've got the old ones still), as you won't get more than £250 extra for the car because of them, but would think you could sell them for £700 or so given they're only a couple of weeks old. Knock off £200 for putting the old ones back on, and you're still £250 up.
I'd maybe even put the old rear lights back in and sell the afterburners off (assuming it's the afterburners you've got). Maybe the green cone filters, too. And the private plate, if it's a decent one.
Anyway, assuming you only take the Nitrons off, and it's a fairly mundane private plate (e.g. S200 TVR and is and S reg), I'd realistically probably expect £18k trade-in, or £20,500k private. If the plate's masked the age of the car, it's a bit different. Prices seem a bit f
up at the moment on '98 cars... everything from £17k-£25k private and trade. Spotted this just now: Autotrader said:

Abbie Leigh Cars i.e. dealer
£1.59 per mile on your profile? Ouch. You need to drive it more!

I do need to drive it more. Did you notice the cost of the Nitrons etc - i.e £1 (because I hadn't had the bill), so the 1.59 is well under the actual cost. The PP does mask the age of the car (as do the spiders, headlight upgrade, replacement new spec windscreen etc).
I've probably spent over 3k on it, and the previous owner spent a good few grand just before I bought it. I suppose that explains why there's such a difference between the price of cars advertised to some extent.
Hmmm, still not sure what to do with it. I suppose I'll have to see how this job works out and how much use I get out of it.

Just noticed the cost per mile of my Tuscan so far. And I've got ominous signs I might be due an engine rebuild shortly.

You'll never get back more than a fraction of the money you throw at it unless you take the bits off and sell them separately - it'll just make it sell quicker. Price is (stupidly) mileage based, and optimism based, by the look of it. I think a lot of the people doing private sales will end up taking £3k+ less than their asking price. They're just making it take longer to sell (even at that low price) by putting people off initially. Best to advertise more realistically than assume some fool'll pay well over the odds. £25k for a '98 with no upgrades at all?

Yep, the models have been compared many times before (do a search). But briefly:
Speed 6. More useable every day, softer than the others (suspension etc).
4.2. Joolz's recommendation (+mods). About 10% cheaper than a 4.5, almost as quick.
4.5. Quickest, top of the range model. Premium on buying (but keep their value)
Budget 3k a year for average mileage. People seem to pay a load to get them sorted, then running costs tail off (with any luck). I'd recommend speaking to the specialists (such as Joolz) to recommend a good car that is for sale to avoid any big bills. Consider the clutch, slave cylinder, tyres, electrics, suspension, starter motor, value clearances etc when choosing a car. All can fail at that age and are almost consumables!

Naturally it will be personal taste, but I would go in this order for the money
you are talking about.
1) 4.5
2) 4.2
3) S6
However, you would probably get more extras for your bucks with a 4.2, but do have
to be more cautious in your search on the 96 / 97 cars.
Plenty of threads as to why, although you may already know as you are in the TVR camp.
Give James Agger a call as the cars come with a warranty, full service, excellent after service...but not dealer prices.
Good luck!
