Cracked rear suspension platform

Just got my car back from str8six and they found it has a cracked platform drivers side rear. As a temporary fix to stop it failing could it be welded? Are they alloy? Or i was thinking an exhaust clamp up underneath the cracked platform as a secondary support?

Hi, no the actual platform the spring sits on! So the full weight is down on it, need to be very careful. Just want to buy some Nitron coilovers but not just yet. Just so it's safe

Bud i would not use it as this will really upset the handling,and if somthing does give at speed and cause a crash you will kick yourself.Would have thought you can buy the platforms what make are they?

Hi Spoony, They are standard cerbera 4.2 setup, totally ste as have only done 20k according to the history. Str8six said they are priority just had the geometry set so a second hand one would probably throw it all out again. Thats why i thought of TIG welding it etc?

Interesting, I've only heard of them failing there once before.

I'd replace asap, in the mean time, yes, weld the hell out of it. Fit a strengthening collor, anything at all. Perhaps read the thread about cracked Gaz suspension (General TVR section IIRC) too, maybe someone else has had this issue?

We've had the top mounts cracked - sent the dampers off, they were replaced and extra strengthening welds all around the top mount (as Nitron/Intrax/Ohlins already have) then sent back FOC. I doubt you'll get that from standard dampers though - even if you could work out who made them.

I remember seeing that about the GAZ shocks cracking! Shocking stuff I can't remember what the material looked like will have to get under and have a good look. It would be damn dangerous if it did decide to drop the spring, almost certainly would lose control!

I'd be more worried about it snapping/shearing completely than just dropping the spring...

Personally I wouldn't want to potentially risk my life (and other peoples!) by doing a temporary bodge to a critical suspension component. Yes, it possibly could be welded. Yes, it could possibly let go without warning if it was. Would I risk it? No way!

Driving a car with dangerous suspension could lead to your insurer not paying out should you claim?
Am sure someone has a couple of old shocks lying around that you could borrow?
