I've just read the 38 steps described in the WSM. Is there a reason the AJP engine wasn't designed with hydraulic tappets?

So it can rev.

Plenty of revvy hydraulic engines around. More likely cost and height of cylinder heads? A wet sump AJP with 4.2 inlets is already a tight fit and a bonnet bulge just wouldn't look right.

Am I right in thinking that you effectively have to do the whole job twice, because you can only do one bank at a time, and you need to work out all the shims you'll need to order before you can fit them?

Not only do you have to do it twice but it usually takes more than one iteration per bank, mine took three goes per side to get right. But it was the first time I had done it and some clearances where a very long way out. Attached is a screenshot of a spreadsheet showing my adjustments. I got them all within one thou in the end.

Also a picture of the sprocket retaining tool made from a bit of Dexion and an old socket.

Many thanks for that, at least there aren't 32!

Some years ago I remember adjusting valves on my V6 Cologne, but it would go off again within 5 or 6k. The stated service interval for the AJP is 12k, is this realistic?

Can any one tell me what size of socket it is that fits on to the cam sprocket. I am at work for 1 more week so can't go look but want to knock a tool up out here.

Cheers

Cam has to come out, no way to get underneath the follower with it in place.

If you mean the old socket that that I used for the spocket to slide on, that is 25mm ourside diameter and about the same length. It needs to be centred about 5mm below the surface of the head.
