Idiots guide: Laptop talking to Cerbera - How?

If you can find an old laptop eg I have one from 2001 ish, then it is generally easier. Download software, plug cable into serial port and then into the ECU, run the program and away you go. (But then you need to understand the results!).
If you have a newer laptop then you have other stuff to do to get it to recognise ports etc...

Currently trying to sort out the same...
If everything goes right, you should do this:
1 - Organise yourself a laptop
2 - Load the diag SW onto the laptop
3 - Buy a serial connector cable, e.g. from Steve Heath
4 - Eventually istall driver for USB converter if you don't use the serial connector
5 - take away cover in pass footwell and unscrew metal cover from ECU box
6 - Plug everything together and start diag SW
7 - Start engine(?)
With F5 you can toggle between connection on/off ECU to laptop.
However, if it does NOT go right (e.g. as for me until now
) it could have various reasons:
- COM-port should be set to COM1 through device settings of your computer
- Bit rate should be set at 4800
- Buffer rate should be set to low
Try use an old laptop with a serial connection (RS232). The moment at which you need a USB converter could already cause problems. I also heard that an FTDI chipset is better as opposed to the Prolific used in my cable.
As it works for some but not for ohers, you may have to test yourself...

Just had all these dramas. I have just got the prolific working and it is better than the other two.
You can change the com port and bit rate by pressing f10(com 1 or com 2)
No need to start engine, but ignition must be on and no immobilized.
The USB cable makes a big difference.
Xp is better than vista/7 IMHO
You need the specific driver from prolific for it to work though.
