new Cerb owner in Holland
Discussion
Hello TVR friends
Since a few weeks I own a Cerbera that was for sale on Pistonheads, its a 1997 4.2 with a engine rebuild
I am truly in love with this car.. its just amazing .
But I run in to a small problem ... I need to find the stamped chassis number that matches the VIN plate .. Is it in the chassis and if so where is it, I found a smal handwelded plate on the front on the tubular frame (close the radiator) but thats just a plate with 5 numbers on it and the numbers are not the same as the VIN number on the plate.. I have the full history of the car and also all of the MOT letters from previous owners and last know owner .
I looked on the net and found the official workshop lists and the location where the number should be, but I looked at my car and cant find it or am looking in th wrong place .
I took the F1 cover off so have a full view of all tubes from the front part of the frame.
does anybody have a picture of there VIN number stamped in the chassis ? or is the number only located on the VIN plate and is the number in the chassis something different
I hope someone can help me with this as I have to go to the Dutch MOT in 2 days and for sue they will ask/look for it and if its not there I have a hughe problem .
as far as I can see the car never had any damage in the front and has not bine repaired before in anyway
Best regards Toine

I found those post also but they dont explain for sure that the number on that plate can be different and not the amount of numbers of the VIN !!

I need to know if it is possible that the numbers on that plate are different from the VIn plate under the bonnet .
That why I asked fro a pic from somebody to make sure that I am not looking for something that is not there ..

You wil find the number on the chassis where the lower right front wishbone is bolted to the chassis. It goes into two plates and on the inside, the VIN number is stamped.
I'am dutch too and had the problem that they could not find it when te car was tersted for the dutch registration.

That should be the build date IIRC..... oh,.... and welcome to the fold

Thanks guys.. will take a look tomorrow if I can find it .
Dutch.. so we probaly know each other ? Do you own a Cerb as well ? would be nice to meet more people with these cars in Holland .
it was a lifetime boys dream to own one of these and now the time is here !! I am happy like a small boy with the car .
The car had 4 previous owners (last one was on this forum as well) and I have all the bills and MOT from start untill now, full engine rebuild 3K ago (crank snapped) modified heads ( gasflow) and loads and loads of bills and minor things in a big book, original manual and books .. so a proper Cerb for a realy good price .
It even has Aircon in it and all eletrics work perfectly .
You will probaly see more of me on this forum as I have plans for the Cerb.. want to do the body of restoration myself, also set-up the engine as far as possible to see if I can get more horepower out of it.
What a amazing car this is, I use to own sportcars before but noe is like this baby ...

I used to have several chevy powered cars, still like them but the way the AJP engine runs ... hell there is nothing like this that can replace it, not even the LS version of the Gm company
If possible give me a ring it are just minor questions but its always better to hear them from a other owner .
For example my rear foglight only works when I run high beam in the front ? is this normal .
also city lightning (as wel call it in Holland ) only comes one when the power of the car is of, if I push the black button to start the engine the city lights stay on but also low beam comes on .
I think I can get around this with the RDW as long as they let me operated the lights (lol)
luckaly the rules are much more easy since this year and thecnical check is done with the APK and not at the RDW anymore

I'll try and it wil probably work out.
When the AJP is "on song", there is almost nothing like it. I therefore hope that yours had a very good rebuild. Snapped cranks, snapped camshafts and more. Mine had a new engine in it from the factory. It had 28.000 miles. On the German Autobahn I had my AJP moment. It literally screamed its way towards 260km/h. Then I probably had a seizure (?) (vastloper) of one or more cilinders. Then I thought "this wil be my cars third engine in 28.000 miles". That was when I realised that I only wanted to spend my money once. Steve Heath started off with his engineconversions. Out of experience....the LS is great. If TVR had the option to buy an ls they wouldn't have developped their AJP (my opinion).
I am not technician enough to say that the engine designs were crap or that they were put togehter with poor parts. They were not that good.
So I hope yours will do fine.
I do not think that ther thingsd with the lights is normal. I do not recall having these things. You are right with the age of the car and the "easy" RDW tests. I bought the non-UK rearlights of the Fiesta and fitted them. Everything was ok.

I have big plans for this engine if it lasts untill the end of this year !! When the AJP is "on song", there is almost nothing like it. I therefore hope that yours had a very good rebuild. bigger valves, Titanium probaly, forged rods and a rebalance of the latest crank ( that should be in there according to previuos owner) bigbore the engine ( with bespoke pistons)and with new cylinders liners, reshape the cams for more topend power, bigger butterlfy inlets and rehaped ports (that I will do myself after all the Ducati`s I have tuned) better exhaust flow and bigger tubes, the original engine was desinged after a F1 car so it has to be possible !!, and maybe a 4 vlave head casted to my specs ( just found a company that can do this for a "normal "price, they produce gearboxes from the Corse Ducati`s for us as well .
I will see where this will take me ... its just a lot of time to set-up the engine as I dream of it
Hope to speak to you tomorrow ( have to bring the wife and kids to the airport in the morning )

Alan, I thought VIN and chassisnumber are the same.
I do not want to start the old AJP/LS debate again. There is enough to read about that in a lot of threads. But, I do like to know (from a real engine expert) what went wrong with the AJP when TVR built it. And, what is better now when they rebuild it and give years and years guarantee on it.
Toine, with your shops reputation you could put a extra sign on the building saying "TVR Specialist". The only problem there is, is that there are not a lot customers in the Netherlands with AJP V8's.

Guys
I found the number in the wishbone part !! thanks for all your help
Arjen, When I open the engine this winter I will know where the problem of this engine is, but I recon its the same story as with the older Ducati`s, just rebuild to our best as we know it and then the engine will be bullit proof !! (I hope) but as far as layout the enghine has a lot things in common with the Ducati engine`s
I think the engine can be good when build correctly, maybe a new part for ou shop ... build propper AJP engine`s for people that want to stick with the special layout engine .
We allready do a lot of work for UK customers on there bikes so why not TVR engine`s ... LOL
