Discussion
Following a 12k main dealer service, i had the car back less than a week before it started to run shite again. I call mechanic that did the work at said main dealer to find out what he had set the throttle pots to ( easy ones first, right?.
Mechanic then informs me that there was a problem with the set up due to cam wear ( not mentioned at all when i picked up the car) & the tappets could therefore not be adjusted either ( though i was charged for them in the service).
Discussion with owner confirms this, & sugests a new set of cams & fitting ( around 2k). Two days after this the car grinds to a halt ( snapped headbolts & underbonnet water fountain).
Car is then sent back to dealer to fit new cams headgaskets etc, where it remained for nearly a month.
After lots of pissing about/problems, i get the car back last Saturday. On sunday the car starts running like a bag of shite, Traced to a dead throttle pot ( replaced & set up by me).
Then last friday the car starts to loose power/run like its missing, so spent all day yesterday trying to find the fault ( pots etc ok). AFR 2468 fault shown on laptop.
Call dealer who suggests checking plugs, now find the plugs are in so tight that i've just snapped a 3/8in U/J trying to get the buggers out!
Any ideas/ suggestions as i'm about to explode!

Which dealer cos I think thats name and shame time.
I'm afraid it's not name & shame time
It's part of the terms & conditions of posting on PH that we don't name & shame as Ted does not want any legal problems arising from it. These are the Rules of posting
Any naming will be binned immediately.

how can there be legal implications if the post is telling the truth?
Ted's site and he makes the rules and I'm sure no one would want to get involved in anything in which they are not directly involved, so you don't name and shame, simple.
Darreni (a fellow Darren
) take it up fully with the dealer get them to sort it out then vote with your feet and take further business elsewhere. Edited to add, I'm guessing you bring the car across youself into Southampton, if so there are a few to choose from in the Hampshire/Berkshire area

Oopps, sorry, will now go and gen up on Ted's bible. Thou wilst not poke fun at cr*ppy dealers. Fingers crossed I don't find them by accident.
Not sure I would take the car back to them under any circumstances. If they strip the threads on the way out they'll helicoil it, and thats a nightmare for the future.
I have a solution. Similar situation, on a friends car. We heated the engine up by running it for 10-15 mins and then sprayed liquid nitrogen carefully on the plug head. Plug came out really easily after that.

A little off the thread here, but there is something i have to get off my chest.
We should as loyal TVR customers sbe able to find a reasonable way arround this problem.
Nearly every time i look at this site there is a case where some poor TVR customer has been taken to the cleaners, can't name and shame the culprits, then along comes another punter who dosn't know the history with whom ever the dealer is and again gets shafted.
I am not balaming PH's they have got to cover themselves legally, right, but we should have some protection.
It's a bloody mine field out there and we are not helping ourselves.

I agree, but I also understand why you can't name and shame. Perhaps it would be better just to include a link in the same thread - e.g. i've just had crap service from a dealer. But i'm sure these guys are fantastic - www.tvrdealer.co.uk
On a more serious note, perhaps there's scope for a 'name and shame' part of the site. But before it's published on the 'net, the offending dealer is given a chance to justify their actions. I think this is the crucial point - you can't publish anything which contains nasty stuff about an individual or company without their permission, right? Maybe this dealer would be happy to have their say and tell us their side of the story? Only fair ..

The best thing to do is if you have had a good service story or can recommend someone then tell us all about it. Then we will know who provides an excellent service and where to go. Those dealers who don't provide a good service will lose customers so they will be forced into making changes for the better (we hope).
Although it's good to get things off your chest on here nothing will normally come of it except agreement from others and further frustration. I always think the best place for spleen venting is on the telephone or face to face with the culprits. We're all grown up on here enough to know that so we'll leave the bitching to the Tamora/T350C owners

Fourwheeldrift, i accept your point but by the time it gets to the telephone stage it's all far too late. You've spent your money, probably already broken down and have been hugely inconvienced.
I like the suggestion regarding dealer satisfaction, we could have a recomended dealer list. Then again nothing is fool proof and we would probably find dealers contributing to their own customer satisfaction survey on here. Oh well......

If you read the rules you will know why we cannot name and shame. the basic fact is that that PH is a business and some of advertising/goodwill comes from dealers.
If everyone was naming and shaming this would impact the site.
However as has recently been proved by TMS some dealers do take us seriously and do respond, and hats off to them.

Seen this sort of thing go wrong on other forums. Although not really the same thing, if you have been reading the skyline forum recently it seems like most of the tuning firms have been naming and shaming each other, so to speak.
Probably best not to start this sort of thing. Besides you can always imply the name of the dealer (as mentioned before).

To be as fair as i can to the dealer concerned, i don't feel that i was taken to the cleaners, just that some of the detail stuff ( like plugs too tight in heads) are an inconveniance(?) if you are 5 mins from dealer, but a major pain in the fcuking ass if you are a ferry trip & flatbed away, as i am.
I have sorted the problem myself in removing the plugs ( one was snapped in half) & spent the rest of the day trying to get the engine to run & drive as it should.
I also had an hours telephone help from the mechanic at said dealers in getting the adaptives sorted ( they wouldn't come below +/ - 15-20% ).
Car is now driving as it should, though with only 94 miles on it since getting it back from a cam, bucket, valve & headgasket renewal I do not think it would be resonable to expect the car to lunch a throttle pot, set of plugs, & be so far out of balance it's not true.
Or am i being unreasonable?
Darren.

I think we should sort out a list of dealers/ independants that are truly rated for good service. A name and praise type thing? We nearly got rid of our car because of awful service from several places, then we found a brilliant independant.
Anyway, on the subject of B**tard cars. Ours has just had complete brake failure, LOVELY. Built by morons, everythings poorly put together and built out of rubbish materials. I mean ffs theres so much plastic on the car yet it rusts in certain places like crazy! The brake failure left us stranded in the south of france, the RAC had to hire us several cars to get us back. Now they want us to pick up the bloody thing by going all the way back again. The main dealers are awful and the cars been a pain in the past too much. Infact, its time to get rid of it. Time to replace it with something German and convertable. The car: mums Mitsubishi Shogun.
Whats worse is the trip was only just over 800 miles and other little faults kept occuring (aircon failure, bits of loose trim, odd rattles etc etc). This might have been acceptable except we have a Cerbera that did triple that trip without any problem at all.
Fantastic car, started first time when we got back and my Dad came back from the first drive with the usual huge grin again. Superb.
Anyway, Name and Praise...
