Benefits of being a preferred F customer
Discussion
Visited F dealer in Zurich today. Principally to show them the CS I just bought. Got chatting about F40s/F50s. They had recently sold an F50 with 16'000 km. advertised for CHF 600'000. Their best customer came and told them he would pay CHF 500'000. As he had bought so much before they accepted! Wish I were such a favored customer as would have bought it on the spot for that amount. What a bargain.

I'd say there was more to it than just loyalty in order for them to drop CHF 100,000 off the asking price!
Sales leader told me the customer had bought two race cars and numerous road cars from them so had presumably spent many millions of Francs over the years. Rocco1 said:

To be honest i had a similar situation a few years back. I walked into a main dealer in Nottingham and they had a 348 for sale for £29,995. I offered them £10, a whispa bar and a half empty bottle of Ribena and they accepted!
and what kind of reply is that?Rocco1 said:

Even at that price they may not have lost money on the F50...if they did it means they have made much.much more elsewhere. I would think race cars in particular have huge margins....much more specialist market.
Trade price for a 16000 km F50 got to be above that so must have lost something. But you are right that they must have made lots in other transactions. So only fair I suppose. I'm just a bit envious of the deal!Schnellmann said:

I'm sorry but it just doesn't compute that they would lose money on the deal? Who says he'll come back? I can understand if it was SOR and they put pressure on the seller, or sold at cost but to lose say 50,000CHF? Can't see it myself. In tat example they've lost 100,000CHF, 50 on sale and 50 on lost potential sale.
Happy to be persuaded otherwise?
The sales leader told me he was his best customer. Given that they are the main dealer for Zurich and I think biggest dealer in Switzerland (where there are lots of people with lots of money) that probably means he sends a lot. I know they sold it for CHF500k. I don't know whether they made a loss - only assume they did based on the price. I'm sure they don't make a loss on the customer.Happy to be persuaded otherwise?
Many things likely at play here. The argument of "who says he'll be back" shows that the poster doesn't understand how Ferrari deals work (or, for that matter, how business deals work on a certain level), particularly in a small country like Switzerland. Only a couple of dealers there, everyone knows everyone. If you like Ferraris, where are you going to go?
If you have been buying Ferraris yearly since 1972 (those people do exist), you get away with a lot. Why? Because you have paid a lot!!!! People give you a deal to allow you to get your hand on a certain car that you want, and in return you pay service bills without asking or your company sponsors a track day, or something like that.
Money is not lost. But these dealers understand the art of playing to the ego of people. You stroke the guy with one hand and you pickpocket with the other. The guy knows this a) because he is not stupid and b) he does the same to his own clients. But because you make him feel good at the right time, about the right things, he is perfectly happy.
So I am not sure what happened with this particular guy as I don't know him, nor the dealer. But the story doesn't surprise me in the least, it is perfectly in line with what I have seen (and unfortunately, not yet experienced myself.....).

Given your growing garage and recent purchase of a new 458, you might yet get a similar experience

Nope, I'm at the end of my money. Given your growing garage and recent purchase of a new 458, you might yet get a similar experience

I hope, BTW, that I was not being (or sounding) harsh. But ever since I've been privileged enough to see just a little bit of the veil lifted, I've just been completely fascinated by the world that is inhibited by the rich. Believe me, buying a new 458 makes you a punk in the view of the really rich. Not a happening guy. Buying a Ferrari is easy, try buying a bespoke yacht.
There are a lot of people on forums who think they know how it works. I don't know how it works, I'm not a playa. But I have seen enough to know when assumptions are incorrect.
I'm just an ordinary guy who is occasionally tolerated upstairs because of a bit of windfall. I hope my comments just help to serve to give an insight, although I'm sure that to some I come off as an arse. To them I just want to say that I realise I'm extremely privileged and it is hard not to look like an arse when you're buying a new Ferrari.
If I am really honest, it is worth the risk of looking like an arse, though. I hope you can understand that.
