Hertford tunnel blast?
Discussion
Ninja and all,
I am arranging a PH meet on Sunday August 4th in Herts, at The Goat pub in Hertford Heath.
My navigation is a bit crap, but I think this is near-ish to the tunnel you guys use for your 'sound testing'. Presumably it's the long one under the motorway?
Full details are on the Porsche forum and Events forum, so let me know if one or two of you want to 'fly a sortie' down to the tunnel. I am getting a silencer bypass fitted for the occasion (!) and there will be some Caterham boys turning up in Superlights as well (they also sound quite good through their exhausts!).
Cheers

Hi Ninja (whenever/wherever u get this message!),
No problems, I thought you must have been on hols as not normally so quiet
Have fun in the sun and we'll do another at some point! We'll grab Guy and his Ultima again, if poss, as his car sums up everything that is right about yank V8s
Cheers

Hi Dom,
Just got a laptop to connect to the internet. The Spanish are a nice lot but not always too bright or efficient. Certainly couldn't live out here myself. Near our villa here there is this one amazing tunnel (for anyone that knows the area its the tunnel going through the mountains on the road from San Pedro (our villa) towards Ojen. I never even used to think twice about that tunnel but now I am absolutely gagging to get the 355 here so I can blast through it. And its not the only one but it seems to go on for around a mile or maybe more and it banks to the left. Two lanes but is quite small and is arched rather than square so must be quite interesting acustically!
Got an Astra TurboDiesel on hire and its one hell of a piece of shite. I drove from Madrid to Marbella at mostly 180KPH but managed to hit 210KPH at one point slipstreaming a lorry going downhill. Did the trip twice and didnt get even see any police. Get to Marbella and got fined 105 Euros for not stopping at a STOP sign! It should have been a 150 but he gave me a 30% discount. WTF? Made him give me a receipt though.
There are so many new shape Merc SLs out here and most are AMG SL 55s. Seen loads and loads of 360 Spiders and an F50 blasting around.
Really wish I had brought the 355. Especially as my mate owns a club right in Puerto Banus bay so I could use his port pass. And I wont even mention the women!
It'll be nice to be back home though.
Regards and hopefully see you soon. The Ultima sounds a good idea too! Will have to speak to Manu and Kevin to see list them up for a blast. Could be useful sound files for Manu!

Hi ninja
Sounds like you've been having fun - even in an Astra diesel, so you must be a resourceful bloke!
I blasted through the tunnel with Guy in his Ultima, but the sound must be best outside of the cars, or in a slightly narrowere tunnel. Still good though!
After my new sports exhaust was fitted (sounds fantastic - almost like a V8 at idle and pure Le Mans Porsche at high revs) Scottster drove my car on a flypast for me. I was in my Rover with the window open, and hearing/seeing my car buzz-saw howl past in racing 911 fashion was superb. Amazingly, it's not too intrusive on long journeys either, as no resonance or droning.
All the best - I'll let you know if Guy and I are on the prowl for tunnels again.
Cheers

Dom- I've just got to hear your car!!! Sounds like it should be totally awesome, though you need some connoisseurs to give you the final seal of approval so you can sleep at night
Didn't have either of my cars last weekend
, but they're back now. We'll have to do a tunnel blast soon, especially since the 360 gets a new voice box on the 19th. Quite fancy a different tunnel/set of tunnels this time; there were some good ideas from a couple of the threads on this site. We'd better get cracking on this judging by the two 'winter layup' threads that have just appeared. Funkyboogaloo wants to have a get together in the Oxford area and I intend to do that too.
Ninja- we've missed you mate! You know, I did think it was a crazy idea to consider driving across to Spain. However. Mrs 456 & I have pencilled in a European trip next year and we are thinking of eating/drinking/hooning our way across France and into Italy; Spain is just turning right instead of left..... Mmmmm. Getting me thinking. See you soon.
Kevin

Oh - Kevin - how the 360 looking now? Did they do a good job?
Not bad, but not great either. Will tell you about it offline and you'll see it yourself anyway. I'll be booking it back in in September but nothing, and I mean NOTHING, is going to stop me having that exhaust sorted
Hi Kevin
Tunnel sounds good. Bluesatin (Guy, Ultima) will be up for it too. Can't do Funky's Oxford Banbury meet on the 18th (seeing my Gran, awww bless!) but the tunnel crew will defo have to meet up.
I will rack my brains thinking of decent tunnels nearby.
Good tho' it is, not sure my 911 will compare to a proper Ferrari F1 soundtrack - drove a 355 F1 and it was the best sounding thing I've been in. For six cylinders the 911RS does OK, though.
Cheers

Hi guys,
Just got back from Madrid early this morning. What a relief to be back here but how depressing is this weather????
The drive from Marbella to Madrid was would have been done within 4 hours but got lost trying to find a restaurant in Malaga. Lost for an hour, bloody Spanish roads. No logic.
I rarely went below 180 KPH (over 110MPH) and the thing that worried me was the other drivers. Most were okay, but some actually seem like they are trying to kill you!!!! Also, some areas of the road are very good, but others are just awful and there is very little warning of the change.
Kevin, I've missed you guys too, loads!! It was such a relief to start the 355 up. It fired up first time, and sounded perfect. But like an idiot I managed to bumped the front spoiler in the NCP. Manu warned me so many times, but I guess I haven't got the Astra Diesel out of my system yet. I'm thinking it will cost slightly under a grand to sort out but I'm sure Maranellos will be able to surprise me!
If you do decide to do a drive through Spain I think you will have a laugh, they have some decent roads and they are not on the constant look out for speeding motorists. If you get caught the worst that can happen is a fine. If you can speak Spanish it will help as not all of them understand English, if not you can always contact our office in Madrid for any assistance!
I look forward to seeing all soon. I am up for a blast any time!
BTW, Kevin saw a 360 Spider with a sports exhaust and I must say it sounded very, very good. I tried to get close enough to see what he had on it but he legged it before I had a chance. I'm thinking you have no excuse to get rid of the 360!
PS. Manu, I can't explain how beautiful the women there really are. It just so happens that an old mate of mine now owns a club right in Puerto Banus bay. Loads and loads and loads of absolutely beautiful girls. I mean absolutely model gorgeous, faultless girls. I didnt take pictures as it would hurt to look at them
