I have never understood the need for test driving Supercars on the road.

Its a complete nonsense and should be stopped.

I buy cars on the telephone not sat next to a salesman while breaking the law and risking his and my own life.

A test drive within the speed limit is not going to sell a Supercar so we all know what happens.

Manufacturers need to recognise this and divert marketing cash in to weekly off road test drive events in a controlled environment.

The article below shows what can and does happen far too often...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/road-and-ra...

and this has been happening for years, just ask your friendly salesman for his dealerships test drive "horror story" they all have one, or two or three.

Most supercars spend 99 % of their driven life on the road - a smooth track surface is not going to persuade anyone (especially significant others) of its capabilities for touring

B roads have a 60 limit, this could have happened within a speed limit.... Depending on what you have come from...

Agree test drive is pointless as it takes many miles to truly understand a car properly....

Haven't test driven any car I've ever bought before buying.. Read reviews, decided from there...

Perhaps we should ban all cars as they all can crash and cause death and injury or restrict the power output of cars.

Most top end manufacturers offer track based taster days to potential customers in my experience.

Let's get serious accidents happen end of .The health and safety police interfere with everyday life too much already

Im not talking about "cars"

These are Supercars being driven fast within 5 minutes of a driver getting in.

Would you like to be the passenger?

and a 10 minute test drive does?

Manufacturers need to deal with this issue and take some responsibility.

I have 2 reasons for test driving

1. make sure its not a bag of nails. I may know I want a particular model. But I'm not handing over cash till I know its not a dog
2. Lets say I'm fancying a change from one model to another in eteh same range. I'm not going to hand over large wedges of cash until I can see there is a difference worth paying for.
3. Make sure I can comfortably drive it.
4. Real world positioning of controls
5. Ability to clear speed bumps and ride quality

none of these is helped on the telephone.

This could just as easily have happened on the way home from him collecting it, as it could a test drive.

don't be such and idiot

That's something that most buyers are not interested in.

Properly organised days simulating road driving but allowing the customer to increase the speed of the car throughout the day and without the need for a passenger.

Im talking about brand new cars and late low mileage cars under manufacturers warranty.

and you can gain all of the above off road.

And why the need for insults? Im sure the salesman who are subjected to this risk would disagree with you calling me an Idiot.

Wow - do you only go to see a film that's had a good review? hehe
Ever made any expensive mistakes through trusting a salesman's patter or simply not being comfortable in the car?

This thread is about Supercars ONLY and youtube/Evo magazine combined with your own experience and understanding of what manufacturers like Ferrari, Porsche, Mclaren, Lamborghini etc build makes it a no brainer.

If you still need to drive one then I have suggested weekly off road events put on by the manufacturer to allow you to make your final decision, SAFELY.

you're wrong I'm afraid - as an example (non-supercar obviously) yesterday we test drove a 435xd and an A5 3.0 quattro - on the face of it cars which are very similar and comfortable to sit in. Without the test drive we'd not have decided that the BM was streets ahead of the A5 in some facets and not worse in any significant ones (except used prices). Without a test-drive this wouldn't have become apparent

Not relevant in any way to this thread. But totally agree on the BMW choice. smile

Luckily so far no mistakes.... By time I talk to a salesman my mind is already made up.... Thanks to google i often know more than the salesman!!!!
Re comfort, its more than just the seats.... For example, I did not spec any pack on the mini, stuck with 16inch rims and non run flats.... Having done my homework.... Though when I do go to do the deal we will sit inside one just to check seats....
When I went to buy gallardo anniversary only wife sat in car to check she could see out of buckets...

Most people who buy their super cars rarely take them to a track and are mainly used to display wealth and status plus the occasional ability to burn Vauxhall corsas at the lights(joking!). However, the main point is that the test drive on road will give the clearest indication of what the car will be like to drive on a daily basis. Whether you crash or not on the test drive is irrelevant because if you're going to be an idiot on the test drive you'll be even more of one on your own and there's an even higher chance of having an accident/crash. I suppose the more relevant question is should there be a certain level of experience/maturity before you're allowed to consider purchasing one but which super at manufacturer will want that. All the footballers removed as a customer base in one go!

Lol are you saying that 'car' test drives are never victims of this. I can remember passing my test a few moons ago now about the same time as a mate. All we wanted to do was go 'test drive' the latest hot hatch - no intention of purchasing...

You telling me you've NEVER got in an unfamiliar car and just gone for it. If not you've live life in a cotten wool bubble my friend and maybe Supercar ownership isn't for you...

What we don't need is any more nanny state BS!
