Sticking to your budget.
Discussion
At the moment I am looking to sell my 997.1 GT3 and get something mid-engined and, as you do, I am trawling the classifieds with a budget. The problem is budget creep!
£75k ..... but if I spend just a little more I can get a .... so I start looking for them.....then I think 'ooh, if I am going to spend this much then for just a few grand more I can get the' ...... I have always wanted one of those.....
All of a sudden the budget has crept up by 30%/40%/50% and I give myself a slap, reset and start again!
Have you ever gone out to buy something and ended up with something completely different?
Surely there must be some stories in this forum of epic budget creep, lets hear them please

I have done the reverse. I gave myself a maximum budget and started looking at the top end. Then I started asking myself do I really need X,Y,Z? What are my main objectives for this car? Ended up spending 85% of the max and very happy with the choice.
Find a car which satisfies your desires, if it comes within budget buy it. If it doesn't buy it next year!

when i first looked to buy a gallardo, was looking at an early model and spending about 65K..... was soon looking at superleggeras in the 100k+ bracket, eventually bought a car for 89k.... when i bought my latest car, creep from around 100k for a 550-2 to over 135k!!! on both occasions, i got exactly what i wanted, and a very good car too... you only live once.

I've spent the last 3 months figuring out what car to go for at around the £100k mark or less. On Saturday I ordered a McLaren 540C at around £140,000 after spending two hours at Birmingham McLaren.£75k ..... but if I spend just a little more I can get a .... so I start looking for them.....then I think 'ooh, if I am going to spend this much then for just a few grand more I can get the' ...... Out of my comfort zone, but happy
Only recent car that came in on budget was a RUF and that was quite a few years ago. Since then it's always been 'just a little more will get it'. I'm not even talking about getting into a better model. I tend to see a car then think I can negotiate to a lower than realistic level and end up convincing myself it's worth it! Only my SLS managed to make a bit rather than lose a lot when selling
I've been looking at AM V8 Vantages. My initial thought was, sell my 996 turbo since I've had it 5.5 years and fancy a change, it's gone up in value and would be almost a straight swap - maybe +5k for a mid-to-high-30s Vantage.
However, I looked at a couple of Vantages which I suspect were the bottom of what's available and wasn't impressed, so am now thinking I keep the turbo before I buy - that way, I can be sure I've got a good replacement before selling the turbo.
Unfortunately, this has started me down an alternative thought process - if I went for a Vantage in the low 30s.... well, it would hardly be worth selling the turbo if I did that would it? I may as well keep them both!
Or, I seem to be thinking that if I did still sell the turbo after finding a Vantage, then maybe I should up the budget to mid-40s and go shopping in AM Dealers which would have used warranties....
Either way, I seem to be considering spending more money than my initial plan! I hope interest rates don't ever go back up - the only argument I have for all the money I keep spending on cars is : Well, it isn't growing in the bank!

I always end up spending more. It happens for all things not just cars.
There is nothing worse than seeing something better, then being sensible and saving money and buying the cheaper alternative.
You always end up wishing you had bought the best.
To avoid this I always pay more and get what I really want - so you have no disappointment because there is nothing better to get!
