I'm not clued up on insurance in Switzerland, but why would he get a 488 as a replacement for his 458? Wouldn't he just get a second-hand 458 and be in the same position as before he set it on fire?

He might have a replace with new policy - in which case, can you still order a 458? If not he would get a 488.

Either way, what a spoilt little st. I guess if you buy you're 20 year old a 458 it's all you can expect.

I assumed it was a case of "Dad you may as well put £100,000 on top of the payout and buy me a 488 now"

The article suggests the valuation he got (presumably for trade in) was less than he wanted, so was going to torch it and presumably get the market value for slightly more, and use that money to buy a 488? Not sure how people are figuring he'd get a completely different car as a insurance replacement.

He wouldn't have got any more money torching the car than selling it (unless he has a new-for-old policy) so would still have ended up with the same amount of money. Maybe it would have been a "Daddy, my car is burndy, can I have a 488 once I've got the insurance money" rather than just saying "Daddy, I'm bored of the 458, can I have a 488", either way, spoilt little st. Don't understand why a kid with numerous millions in property and numerous cars feels he can't ask for any more though...

Well if he had bothered asking maybe his dad would have preferred to pay for a new car rather than 140k bail!

Sometimes you just have to blame the parents, in this case his father.

May have had fixed-value insurance?
