Posting on behalf of a friend. He's off to look at a Maserati Gransport this afternoon. As much as I love Italian cars I was trying to put him off due to reliability and servicing costs and slight jealousy. But he's adamant and will probably put a deposit down. So what are they like?? is serving pricey and are they reliable?

The car looks great and will obviously sound lovely but what should he look for. I may go with him if I can free up the afternoon.

Thanks

Go for as late a model as he can afford. They are reliable - although I hated the satnav. I'd stay away from Skyhook - but your friend should try with and without and make his own mind up. Everything just works - which is why you see quite a few of them - they just need to be used. Perfect car for european tour! It is NOT a sports car - it's a sporty Grand Tourer!

As above, buy as late as you (your mate) can afford. Buy on condition and history, they can take the miles if looked after.

In terms of running cost, it depends what you're used to. There's the odd big bill but typically mine hasn't cost significantly more than the M3 I had prior.

Re the skyhook, I believe it's standard on the GS but I may be wrong.

Two rules to stick to.

1 get it inspected prior to buying, by someone who knows the cars.
2 spend some time on SportsMaserati.co.uk. Unbelievable resource of info run by cracking guys.

Good luck!

I run one.

Loads of info here: https://checkvist.com/checklists/39832-maserati-42...

Also sportsmaserati as already stated.

Early ones are often light on options - no leather, xenons etc. That said, leather probably adds £2k to the price, I'd rather half the half leather and 2k.

Check when the clutch was last done. £1500-2k job. Walk away unless perfect history (unless very cheap and you are willing to take a punt - like me).

Get a PPI. The control arms are developing cracks in UK cars and they are expensive. They crack on the inside so can't easily be seen. I paid £1k for a new arm, but new, cheaper ones might be available. Definitely get someone to inspect it for this.

All Gransports have skyhook. I'd disagree on the GT vs. Sports car thing. I'd say that's true of the 4200. The GranSport is hard, and loud in sport mode!

Pretty much all been covered.

Get an inspection, even if buying from a known and trusted source. If there's no issues, they won't mind.

It IS a GT rather than a sportscar, but much more sporty than the Granturismo that replaced it.

I reckon mine costs about a quid per mile all in, it would be a bit less if I used it more as it dilutes the service cost.

As for reliability, I'd say they are more "characterful" than unreliable smile I've put 10k on mine in 2.5 years (it is a 3rd car so most of the effort is getting it to the front of the drive) and done a few long trips as well as commuted, shopped, been to the tip, and Travis Perkins. I've had it serviced every year, and it has always got me from A to B.

The car has never had a bad reaction, and had a lot of good ones. Actually an awful lot of good ones, thumbs up from everything from the driver of an immaculate XR4i the other Friday coming back from work, to the van load of Spaniards who kept thrashing alongside and encouraging us to drop 3 gears and rev it away up the motorway. Even the Spanish Policeman who asked me something like "Who do you think you are, Fernando Alonso?" laughed and waved us on, although I think he was slightly embarrassed when he realised my wife was sat in the side with the steering wheel.

I took the ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff the other week, drove down through France to Angouleme for the Remparts races, then down to Aragon for the MotoGP, and back on the Bilbao ferry. Dunno how much fuel it used and if that is an issue then don't buy one, but I reckon on the cruise bits it was doing just over 20mpg which meant 300 miles between fillups. Somewhat less in the mountains smile

It played nicely all the way until I got on the ferry home when the window decided to wind all the way down and stay there when the door handle was opened (it is supposed to drop an inch). I left it as the battery isolator is in the boot and was behind 70 bottles of Rioja, and it went back up again when I pressed the button in the car, I just couldn't get out and close it again. I got home, emptied it, turned the battery off for 30 mins and it has been fine for 400 miles since. It has only just occurred to me I could have wound the bloody thing up from the passenger seat and got out of that side frown

Prices for these seem pretty stable, the GS wasn't really updated but there are 2 trim levels, although there's little to choose between them. The stereo is awesome, the satnav awful. Mileage affects the price, but they're not as sensitive as Ferrari or Lambo.

Go for one with a good history and plenty of miles and just use it.

Pretty much everything that needs to be said has been covered. Mine is a 2006 car and is very light on options, which i personally don't mind as i only really drive it for fun so i'm not bothered about cruise control etc. The Tech cloth is a bit annoying though, i think mine is classed as silver, whatever it is it marks up quite easily, really difficult to keep clean, i'd definitely rather have leather but it's not a deal breaker.

Mine has done almost 70k now and is still superb, it's genuinly exciting to drive, i'm sure it would be left for dead by a modern M3 but i know which i'd rather have

Really nice cars,I had one a few years back. From memory it was an "LE" (which just meant it had lots of options). Full leather is nicer but what's important will differ person to person.

Running costs - they were high. Mine had a full main dealer history & the bills weren't cheap, that being said using a specialist would save a good chunk of that. Especially as these cars get older, main dealers are restricted in what they can do in repairing/refurbishing parts compared to specialists who will look at every option.

As for the car, definitely a sporty GT rather than a sports car but very nice none the less. Back seats were huge, could easily fit 4 adults in them. Only downside was the gearbox was pretty poor in normal mode so I ended up driving mine in sport mode all the time.

Get it inspected first just to be safe!
