I was asked to sign off on a £5,000 insurance excess to test drive a McLaren at Ascott recently, which I thought was pretty high compared to other dealerships that I have visited. What's the norm out there - if there is one?

Thanks. Good to know. I'm used to there being some sort of waiver and excess but that seemed high. Irritating. I'm currently waiting to see the new TVR at the end of March (hopefully) before making a call on a 570GT - they are very different cars but I only have so much space. I had explained that to them, detailed the cars in my garage already and my plan going forward, but on seeing that excess I almost walked. I did end up driving the car but it left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't expect to be treated any differently from any other potential customer but clearly I was - negatively.

? No paranoia, I was just surprised it was so high and since it's clearly not standard (see above) it's thus disappointing. Certainly nothing to get paranoid about, I'll simply be better informed next time.

Should not have mentioned you were waiting for a TVR. LOL. I have had my deposit down now for 2 years and getting a bit pissed of with the waiting, got a call from a Lotus dealer today to say TVR is never going to happen.
Might just be saying tat as I test drove the new 410, TVR will have to come out with a special car to match that.

Hmmm. Not quite as long for me but I still have everything crossed that the preview in March will happen and tick all the boxes. We so need for someone to build a car as described by Les Edgar "TVR is about being a petrolhead. It’s in-yer-face. It’s not supposed to smoothly waft you along in silence. It’s about being noisy, wheelspinning in front of the pub, in an exotic, handbuilt, and visceral car" and Gordon Murray “A lot of supercars now try to be all sorts of things. They try to be well-engineered, with all the latest trick suspension and electronics. They try to be track day cars, and they try to be status symbols and that goes with a lot of baggage – size, complexity and weight. I don’t want to do any of that rubbish, I really don’t. I just want to do a pure, pure supercar again, like the F1 was. And I think there are enough people out there to move in a different direction again. I’d like the next supercar to point the same direction change the F1 did in 1992.”

Bingo. Time slots for the reveal have just arrived in my inbox. Les must have read our posts wink For me at least the new TVR has the potential to turn the supercar market on it's head and provide an alternative to the top-trumping car-flipping garage-queening trend of late. I got sucked in like many others but I'm feeling my inner driver awakening. Here's hoping.
