575 / Vanquish
Discussion
This could probably be in the Classics and Yesterday'sHeroes thread, buthere we are.
I'm at home, waiting for a tradesman, so I turned on the telly, and Dave has (as per usual) an old episode of Top Gear.
It's around 2004, a d JC and Steve Coogan are looking a tthe Ferrari 575 and the AM Vanquish S.
They both say the Vanquish is the better looking car, and Steve says he doesn't think the Ferrari will age well.
With the benefit of a dozen years' hindsight, I'd say that neither ststement is true. I'm just interested in the opinions of others.

I'd say it's still a very close call between them, but that has to be one of the stand-out segments on Top Gear of all time, the slow-mo of the wheelspin in the wet and the filming generally was superb. Only bettered by Hamond in the Alpine tunnel in the Zonda roadster.... It's around 2004, a d JC and Steve Coogan are looking a tthe Ferrari 575 and the AM Vanquish S.

The Vanquish, whilst stunning, to my eyes looks a 'heavier' design - the 550/575 just have that more athletic/mean look about them that IMO has helped them age well
I have a cat here, and a bag of pigeons, so:It is my opinion (and therefore a fact) that since the Vanquish, Aston Martins have generally got prettier, and since the 575, Ferraris have generally got less pretty.

I think that's why, in my eyes, the 575 has aged better than the Vanquish.

I would agree with that, and I think it's because Ferrari designs have become fussier. The 550/575 is a very clean design, there's not a lot to it really - no swoops or scoops on the doors for exampleIt is my opinion (and therefore a fact) that since the Vanquish, Aston Martins have generally got prettier, and since the 575, Ferraris have generally got less pretty.

Wrong, Vanquish is prettier and has more presence than later Aston's, Autocar top 100 most beautiful cars survey said so! Vanquish came 9th....I would have placed it higher, but hey ho!
My old man prefers the DB9......I tell him to get his cataracts sorted!
Anyway, I was looking at a 550 before buying the Vanquish, so would have been very happy with one in my garage instead.
Lamborghini Muira SV (dated or not) in my opinion is the most beautiful car ever built. Anyone agree?

I think you're right on both counts but I'd argue that Astons have become lest distinctive since the Vanquish pioneered the current 'face'. For me the V8V is just timelessly beautiful. I like some modern ferraris, but overall the older designs were better imo
the worst for me is the 430 in non-scuderia spec
Need to see the 812 in person, but on pics it somehow looks very overstyled - esp the front lights
Having said that, not all old ones are good looking either - the mondial comes to mind
Never owned a 550/575 but I have driven a few, and they are a fantastic drive, especially with a manual trans. I have owned a Vanquish, I think one of the best looking cars ever, and they sound glorious. I loved the Vanquish, but ultimately sold it because of its persistent unreliability.
A few pics below, beautiful car.
