I want a car for the track. I don't really care how well it drives on the road but I will be taking it on road trips occasionally so it doesn't make sense for me to buy a true track car such as a radix or bac mono. What will take me fastest around a medium sized or large track such as Silverstone or Brands Hatch GP? I don't like being overtaken in my Caterham on the straights when I know I'm faster around the corners. I've owned a McLaren before and nothing beats a McLaren on track for the money. But I've never owned a Lambo or Ferrari before so maybe it's time for a change?

Or maybe I should really exert my selfishness and go for that BAC mono I really want? I'll never be able to take a passenger though

If it's track orientated you are after, the answer is normally GT3 RS or 675LT

Another contender (might also save a bob or two) is the Mercedes AMG GT R

Of the 4 you listed, I'd take the 720s.

For occasional road use but mainly track use an Ariel Atom is where my money would go or a Viper ACR. Why not buy an ex track car and a truck it then you don't have any worries.

Agree with the above with exception of the merc.

675LT coupe with clubsport pack would be the perfect car though.

488 - meh

Performante - not as fast and might struggle with noise Db

600LT - if you can get one but wont be as quick or as accomplished as a super series car with active aero and hydraulic suspension

720S is ballistically quick and great value for money

In terms of speed, I would have thought the 720s. Was faster than the GT2RS in a SportAuto Test I read.

Viper ACR Extreme. Very, very fast on track and a traditional 6 speed manual box for maximum driver involvement. They also have huge road presence and are very rare here in the U.K. This one is for sale for $149k in the US so slightly over £160k by the time you get it here.

Fastest round a track, and the most engaging experience - Performante

Fastest in a straight line, and clinical - 720S

Only engaging when driven almost flat out - 488gtb

All imo, and ymmv etc..

I somehow doubt a Performante will be faster than a 720 on Trofeo R / both on similar tyres.

Well the only time we have for the Nürburgring ring shows the 720 to be 22 secs slower than the Perf, don’t think similar tyres would slash the difference by that much, do you?

Only one I am aware of is the GT2RS being slower than the 720 (on I believe Corsas, tbc) in the SportAuto Test and that is same driver same day - so I would give quite a bit of weight to that if one really wants to compare how fast the cars are (not particularly important to me but the OP question)

Wasn’t aware that McLaren set a 720 time with a professional driver at the wheel ala Lambo

Edit: just checked, it was on Corsas vs the RS on Cup 2s and the times at Hockenheim GP were 1,48.2 vs 1,49.1

Well now I want to think about the GT3RS as well because I do see a whole bunch of them whenever I'm at a track event. I've always thought all Porsches look the same and they seem quite boring but if it's going to take me around a track quickly and will bring the best out of me, then I'll happily consider it. Right now I know I'm taking my Caterham to the limit and I need something faster on the straights but just as controllable around corners

Well the GT3RS is a great choice for a track car, and as you say is the weapon of choice for the majority in that price range, but that wasn’t in your original question... lol.

A GT3RS is probably a sensible option - faster on the straights than your current car, good in the corners and probably a lot cheaper to run than a McLaren or Lamborghini as a mostly track and occasional road car. Cheaper to buy too.

Probably makes sense to get some advice on the Porsche forum / read some threads there.

Have a new .2 GT3 RS and tracked it a few times with friends who have 488 , 720 and GT2 RS . It holds it's own but those others cars are significantly faster on the straights . The extra 200 bhp Makes difference even when you have better exit speed . The Performante possibly need the Trofeo and a good driver to optimise .
Oddly the GT3 feels more like a race car , so underpowered ( as usually they have restrictors ) but with the spring rates higher , runs very flat , so maybe better tyres would optimise it .
Get in the 720 and it is a pure rocket , very rapid .
I am really impressed with it and the 675LT as track car , plus you get the Maclaren days to play .
But am old Pork head of many years so happy to be there and they are reliable , cheaper to run generally .
488 is very impressive as well especially on Cup 2's
Gt2RS also maybe better in hands of good/pro driver to optimise as well
the real bang for your buck

Have you considered a Radical SR3 rsx ?
You can pick a really nice late car up for around 50-60k but would need a trailer to move it around which you may or may not want to do but I can tell you that of all the cars mentioned above this would wipe the floor with each and everyone of them with ease and they have two seats for passenger rides etc.
Just a thought !

Thank you for all the replies. I did think about a radical or some of the other cars available at racecarsdirect.com. In fact there are some amazing cars for less than half the price of the cars I've listed and I could do so much with the difference. I need a car with a numberplate to get on many of the track days I'm interested in attending. That is a very viable alternative!

I quite like that Radical coupe and that has a number plate plus cheaper and a lot faster than normal cars. Might be a bit frustrating though to be constantly held up by slow cars

Radicals are very harsh on the road and I wouldn’t recommend you do that but as you mentioned, it is VERY frustrating on a trackday ( depending on your ability ) because everything else is a mobile chicane and I mean everything. Test days are better but for that you will require a race licence but you will be out with similar speed cars and you can really exploit the radical on these days.
Good luck with your decision.
