Giugiaro designs first Ferrari

Prototype revamps the 612 Scaglietti

Ferrari is showing a one-off, Giugiaro-designed car to celebrate the designer's 50th year of car design.

The Ferrari GG50 is a one-off prototype, and is now on display at the Tokyo show which opened yesterday. Most Ferraris have been designed by Sergio Pininfarina - this is Giugiaro's first but it won't reach production.

The GG50 is based on the underpinnings of the 612 Scaglietti. Though four inches shorter, it retains the long bonnet of the base car and looks much more attractive, with its trapezoidal grille, and kicked up haunches that advertise the power within. It retains the trademark quad lamp arrangement at the rear, while the glasshouse is pillarless. What's more, it's also a hatchback, though you wouldn't know it -- and the rear glass is frameless, and looks just like a fixed rear window.

Giugiaro said that there were some new ideas in the car that Ferrari could use for production.

The origins of the car are a conversation at the Paris show last year, when Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo agreed to donate a 612 Scaglietti for the project, as long as the finished result looked like a Ferrari, and that it was more compact.

The nose sticks out too much at the front and looks like a Mazda RX-8 as a result.

Not very Ferrari.

I'm not a big fan, but I'd say it is more Ferrari than the 612.

it's not FERRA ... looks strange - really begins, as RX-8, finishes - as FIAT Brava. Don't like at all.

Its not his first Ferrari, he did a beautiful one-off 250 whilst at Bertone in the early 60s.

(If anyone can tell me how to do the image-tag thing I would look a whole lot smarter)

It's an Alfa. Give them another few years and they really will still to look like Fiats. Sad days.

Looks quite nice. Certainly better than the 612 anyway... you guys have to remember the idea of a styling exercise , plus i'm sure it will look much better in the flesh

I think that neatly answers the question of why he,s never been asked to design a real one!
Almost makes the 612 look ok.....nearly

The rear end just looks too high for the car to me.
