Help!!What Ferrari??
Discussion
I need some advice and thought this might be a good place to start. At present I drive a Series 1 Lotus Elise and love her. But I have a hankering after a classic Ferrari - however I'm not sure what I would get for around 25K. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I quite like the 308 GTB/S....What are the pitfalls etc of owning a classic Ferrari? My other half is very mechanical and also does bodywork (paintless dent removal etc)Help please..

Not far off of 348 money.......great cars.
The biggest pitfall IMO is the price of parts compared to most other makes. This has eased a bit recently though with guys on the internet cross-referencing parts and publishing 'how too' guides on places like ferrarichat.com and fcars.co.uk. On a 348 you can buy Ferrari pads at £100+ (that squeak like crazy) or 911turbo pads at £30 (that work great). You can go to a dealer for a clutch at £1000, or remove the plate yourself (1 hours work) and have it relined for £40. With a 25k budget you have a fair amount of choice, but remember to add a 'slush fund' of a few grand just in case an expensive part is needed.
'Normal' servicing on a 308/328 with a recent full belt service would probably be about £400/£400/£400/£1200. A 348 is a bit more, maybe £600/£600/£600/£1800. Obviously there will always be 'extras' needed over this 4-year example period.
IMO a 348(92-> battery in front model), 308QV, or 328 if you can find a good one in budget.

That was a very cheap car!
Another idea one day too late, this went for £24,500 at Barons yesterday www.barons-auctions.com/lots/CherTrns.htm
Blimey those 2 looked very cheap!!!
As mentioned before, I guess you need to consider maintenance budget. A 308/328 would indeed be cheaper to maintain for example a cambelt change is an engine out job for a 348/355 where as the older car can be done in-situ. I have a 308 and although is not quick compared with most modern machinery, brings a smile to my face every time I drive it. Standard models are looking a little dated and for some the 348's style doesn't work.
As long as you buy a good one to start with, any model will bring a smile to your face!
Good luck with your search!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I will certainly look at the 348 as well. I have to now decide whether to sell the Lotus or put it away for my nephew! At the moment I don't want to sell her because she may not be fast but she makes me smile every time I drive her. Also she's a future classic and should be kept for later!!
