4200 spyder vs E46 M3 vs 996
Discussion
i was driving home late last week and came across a M3 by the traffic lights....next thing you know we're off! I was quite suprised how quick the M3 was! I always knew the cars were close in terms of 0-60 etc but I felt the difference in BHP/Torque should have made more of a difference! Maybe you could call it driver diffs as have only had the spyder for 9 weeks or so but in terms of everyday performance, which one comes out on top? Some of my friends have 996's and they dont seem as fast in a straight line but in terms of grip they appear to go around corners better than the maser....any thoughts?

Come up against an M3 when I had my 3200gt manual and the difference was very obvious mid range(imo) Obv this is also down to drivers etc....But the M3 did not seem no where near as quick.
Now I own an M3 (conv) and after 9 months I would say the car is an all round more useable and reliable day to day high performance car (having never broke down unlike my 3200 - from personal experience) but also does not feel nowhere near as quick as a 3200 or 4200 (also had experience of the 4200 for an extended period - Did not care much about the awful Paddle Shift GearBox on the 4200 personally - Even though I do not think the 4200 rear Lights are as impressive as the 3200 but the handling of the 4200 Imo is better than the 3200 and the 4200 interior appears to have more space plus the seats feel more confortable(sorry guys but the 3200 rear lights are wonderful!)
just my Opinion for what its worth.
awaiting the Flames now.
The Maserati is a great car and has more kudos IMO than the M3 and the performance is brilliant so don't be worried about the M3 or Porsche's.
When the Cars Work correctly, every drive is an experience.
Wonderful cars overall.
Sadly for me the Maserati's I experienced were far from reliable. Although I know others may feel different.(again based on personal experience)
But ownership of any car is down to individual experience.
The M3 However is a great day to day car and I for one look forward to the new M3 if it has the V8 and 400bhp.

Theres someone on here who used to have a 4200 sypder, interestingly one of my colleagues brothers has an M3 cab and coincidentally they met one day on the M£.
M3 went all the way up to the limited and couldn't catch the spyder. Spyder still had legs left in it, the M3 didn't.

I heard that story too

Handling is where it counts and the 3200, 4200 does not have it. I have been on track with alot of them and they are lardy rolly pollys! (Gransport the exeption) The M3 is a much more capable machine. Unless you go to Santapod alot.

Probably are, but on that front it handles well enough for me and is nice and quick. In fact being on the edge a little (more in the 32 than the 42) makes it a bit more fun!
I'm not going to track it, I'm not a race trained driver, and I'm not going to try and go round corners .1 secs faster than the last guy (see clarksons points about the gallardo vs 430).
If you want something that quick round corners, get a noble

If you want improved handeling on a 4200, do what I have done and change the standard springs for Gransport springs. Get it set up by someone who knows what they are doing and the differnce is amazing. It is stiffer on the road, but not at all uncomfortable and the body roll is almost non existant. Turn is mind blowing and there is no pitching under braking, changes of direction ie loading the chassis from one side to the other is superb. Do it, it's cheap (fairly) and is the best performance upgrade you can make. Unless you are a high street posser and only drive in straight lines that is.
Coupled with the excellent C/C gearbox the car works really well and is quick. I drove it back to back with my mates 3200 Asseto Corsa on Monday and the A/Corsa felt awful by comparision. I really don't like the engine it the 3200 and the chassiss feels crude next to the 4200.

Sounds like a good mod too do!

Scott.
I've just put two and two together and realised who you are. We've met a few times, Goodwood last year when I was in my GT3RS and I was also on the Maserati Club bash in North Wales last October.
The A/Corsa I'm referring to is my mate Russell, who I think you know via the club. Marios and co are also good buddies of mine.
Hope you are well and maybe see you soon.
Cheers Jonathan
Unfortunatly I couldn't make it last weekend, but I know the lads were in attendance. Good show by all accounts.
Is there another similiar Autumn Maserati rally this year?
Are you still tracking the CSL? I also fancy a clio trophy for hooning around in, I hear they are a great drive.

Thats because the 3200 is a mans car which requires a great dollop of skill to get the best out of.

Okey dokey.
Interesting that the same mate also owns a 4200 spyder, is that a mans car? He must be very confused about his gender with those two his garage.

I think what you're saying is you just need much bigger balls to drive the 3200 in the wet in sport mode than the 4200 spider. I know I used to have a 3200 and now have a 4200 and my balls are now a normal size again

Jonathan-yeah their is one in north yorkshire at the end of sept. Just got rid of the CSL, got a Z4Mcoupe coming in a couple of weeks! The Trophy is amazing best FWD car I have ever driven! But its going when the coupe arrives ( I got too keep a check on my habit somehow and I'll never lose the Cup)
