I have booked my car in for warranty repairs at Maranello's in Egham this month. I asked whether or not a courtesy car is avialable, and after a barrage of questions about my current insurance cover, I was duly booked one. My assumption of... number of questions = good car eg ferrari 355(!) or equiv to my maser spyder but instead I was told the car being sent would be a Toyota Avensis! I pissed myself laughing for about 5 mins on the phone!

Is this the norm or are there any garages out there that give out decent courtesy cars?

I spoke to Meridian this morning and they have Alfa 159/147's! Rev happy twin sparks! If I remember correct, I think the Avensis was a diesel as well!

Lancasters in Colchester use an Audi A4...

Like you.. had a similary experience - loads of Qs etc, found it all very amusing.. Had to get a cover note from my present insurer (admin fee of about £15), although waived on that occasion.

You would think there might be mileage (no 'pun' intended) in the dealer letting you try something else (interesting) for the time your car is in - you know - try and get you interested in your next car!! they could set a max miles of 100 or whatever ...

....... what did they use to say?? the car in front of you is a .....

Given the costs involved I don't think you can expect them to give you a 360 or Gallardo as a courtesy car and let you dissapear into the distance with it.

Having said that I did get a Maserati Quatroporte once when the 360 was in for service.

Worst was Team Central TVR who on one occasion the previous customer had wrapped their Golf round a lamp post so the gave me a P reg (the first time round) Mini 850!

TBH the vast majority of owners run at least one other car,and Maranello offer a collection and delivery service, so very few loan cars are required!

You honestly expected them to loan you a Ferrari?

Try asking an indie to even collect your car, let alone give you a loan car!

Just got my Avensis! I have to say it is the most boring car I have ever driven. I nearly fell asleep at the wheel due to lack of stimulation! The only bonus is the Ferrari valet mats which confuses the parking attendant in my parking lot! can't wait for the Spyder to get back!

I must say, no wonder the 3 series outsells cars like this, If you can get one as a company car why on earth would you want to drive a Mondeo/Avensis/407 etc!

God hope I never have to ever buy one of these cars in my lifetime!

As a 911 owner its funny to read..

Dealing with official Porsche dealers you're only ever likely to get another Porsche as a courtesy. In my two years of ownership I think I've gone through the whole current range (Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne, 911). One of the benefits of Porsche manufacturing so many cars - there's always a couple hanging around spare..!!

Having said that I agree that it might be a tad unrealistic for them to hand over a set of keys to a Ferrari for everyone booking in a service...!

a good friend had a brand new cayenne a couple of years ago with lots of problems, on one occasion his loan vehicle was a smart car, from a london main dealer.

Hummm... H R Owen Sports Cars (London) handed me an Audi A8, no questions asked, when I left my Coupe for servicing. Not the sort of car I would buy, neither a lame duck. They could have lended me a QP, but was in the hands of their Manager (summer holidays, that is...)

However, would NEVER expect a Ferrari to be handed-over as courtesy car, even if being a Ferrari owner.

I wouldn't moan too much, imagine if they had a fleet of Ferraris only to be used as courtesy cars, our servicing costs would go through the roof!!!! The cost of those cars would have to come from somewhere.

I worked at a Merc dealer a few years back and we'd have cutomers booking in S600's and getting a Fiat Panda as a courtesy car! I would not be too happy with that if I was off to meet a client!

I work in a Landrover dealership where we currently have a fleet of Landrovers as our courtesy vehicle which does include Freelander (mostly), Defender and Discovery. We don't have Range Rover or RR Sport or high end Disco's as courtesy vehicle as the cost involved is sky high, and as already mentioned above, the costs would only be passed on to the end customer. I find that High end Range Rovers owners couldn't give a monkey what they drive when there vehicle is wih us but those with £5000 old banger, want £30000 worth of courtesy car so they get a little disappointed!
I have colleagues in other landrover dealerships where they have Focus type courtesy cars along with Defenders (usually for the farmers!!) This is something i expect will be common place over the next few years as run of the mill 'hatch' vehicles becoming cheaper and cheaper.
