Increasingly you see more press / talk about detailing, the benefits of waxing, claying etc and more and more companies popping up charging £200+ to detail a car.
So I decided to give this malarkey a go. Bought some cheap wax (£12) and wax just the front of the G – it was a liquid wax so was easy and quite quick. I have to say I was impressed by the results, both the look, and then next time I washed the car, the dirt just wiped off first time from the front. OK, I’m starting to get convinced they could be something in this. So I waxed the rest of the car, again I was impressed with the results. However I did noticed the flat engine cover on the G felt rough when waxing. Looking closely I could see plenty of small back spots, and other small marks that looked like rust! Well the marks were orange/red and looked like they bled into the paint.
So I thought I’d give clay a try, bought some white clay (Meguiars) to try on the engine cover. OH! The first 5 or 6 strokes across the paint feel like rubbing grit (yes i had just washed and dried the car) but after that it becomes smooth. You can actually hear the clay rubbing the panel for the first couple of strokes, then no sound, i’m taking that to mean the clay as done it’s job. Turning the clay over, the underside was yellow, showing the grime it had removed that normal washing doesn’t. So after an hour I stood back to examine the results – OMG – all the little spots had been removed, and the panel looks like it’s just been waxed.
I have to say I am amazed at the results. Yesterday I did the rest of the car, i only noticed a gritty feeling on flat horizontal panels on the car, engine cover, the rear above the wheel arches, wing mirrors, and just behind the front wheels on the section before the door panel.
Today’s task – apply the Zymol wax which was delivered yesterday – do I earn geek badge for will i just be labelled a sad git?
Regards
Simon

I bought a Meguiars clay bar last weekend and did the 360 (tour de france blu) that evening, it didnt take nearly as long as I thought. I then went over it with the Meguiars Gold Class polish. I did want to get some Zymol, but my local stockist didnt have any in so the Meguiars will have to do for now. But I really dont know how the clay bar does what it does so well compared to say a cutting compound polish. But well recommended.
When/if the weather turns better today I am going to go over the 996 too, which is looking worse for wear as its been used quite a lot recently and being Basalt Black should look fantastic.
