Seems my last post got deleted. Understandable. It was a little gruesome, so I'll try again. (I mean this is a 1/3 Lamborghini forum, right?)

As I understand it, Lamborghini doors open in an upwards direction. Please feel free to point out if this is not the case. If, perchance, one of these fine italian motorcars were to become inverted by the side of the road, would the door design prohibit the driver from being able to open the door, or have the Italian engineers thought of this already and worked around it?

Phil,

Your thread has not been deleted (yet).

I've simply removed it from public viewing, due to the insensitivity of the pictures shown.

could say that about most cars why make a convertable its no good if you roll it why make a car that does 100mph the speed limit is 70mph i think this thread is pointless

Out of the current range, only the Murcielago V12 have the doors as you described. The Gallardo V10 use 'normal' opening doors.

I will leave to the owners to comment on the safety aspect of the swing doors. Swing up doors were introduced on the Countach concept back in the early 1970's so I guess they stuck with them on the production car!

i once read valentino rolled a countach and pushed out the front screen to escape. on a later lambo the side windows would break out i guess.

Not really, convertibles have to have strong enough windscreens that the car can be upside down without it all collapsing, so you can still get out.

I still think it's a valid question.

If it's a big concern I'd suggest buying a different model. Everybody should carry an 'escape' glass hammer (like you see on trains) in the glove box anyway. Any type of shunt could jam the door on any type of car. As for convertibles, yes the screen frame can support the weight if you place it down gently - but in an actual roll? And what about intrusions into the cabin during the accident?. Hmmm...

Cheers for the helpful responses guys, I have to admit I'm not planning on buying one, the closest i'll get to italian exotica's a 70s alfasud (or the remains thereof) but the question was asked on a different forum, so i thought I'd ask here. Glad I did.

Emergency hammer's a good idea though...

PS Apologies to anyone offended by the first attempt at this question

Half of all Lambos built had conventional doors (Muira, Espada, Islero, Urraco, Jalpa, Gallardo) but I appreciate you mean 'scissor doors', as fitted to Countach, Diablo and Murci.

There were practical reasons for such an arrangement, as well as aesthetic but, you're right, getting out of an inverted 'scissor door' model would be tricky.

Originally, Lamborghini actually recommended that the occupants push against the windscreen with their feet. The screens were designed to be pressed out in an emergency. Later the subject was just skipped over. I think the reasoning is that, in order to actually flip a Lambo over the situation would be so dire that the occupants are probably incapacitated anyway, and would be unable to take any action to help themselves.

Scissor doors are still cool, though.

I have been trapped upside down in a car (fortunately no fire) and I got out by kicking through the side window which shattered quite easily.

...as I've said before...

Because of that issue of not being able to open the scissor doors, I keep one of these in the car ...lifehammer
...in the event where you need to get out of the side window, it may help!!!
