Thats crazy. How is it possible for a speedo to stop like that? I mean it looks as if the car flipped over right? And then hit a lamppost/tree on the drivers side?

Nasty.

O/T: This one breaks my heart

Notes: This car had no damage whatsoever. The car had a brake overhaul and cambelt service in Germany 2 months prior to breaking. Body is very good, car drove well & all checks were carried out.

There ought to be a law...

It depends how the speedo is driven. If driven electronically with a stepper motor rather than by cable then it will stop wherever it was when the power went off.

When my Sagaris electrics went pop the speedo stuck at ”very fast” with the tacho at about 5,200RPM. And there was no way of moving it again without power.

It’s not a reliable way to know how fast a car was going when it crashed. If it lost traction or the rear wheels left the ground (as certainly looks possible with that Maserati) and the driver had his foot down the wheel speed could rapidly increase compared to actual speed.

We've had some really messy ones at work - two fatals in the last six months - not at all pleasant.

on big head on collisions you get needle slap where the needle basically slaps the gauge so you can tell the speed of impact. as for the stepper motor ones, yep, need power to reset.

Theres a couple of other nice ones as well that they have dismantled. There was one that was featured in a book. Ok it had a bit of rust and lack of compression on 1 cylinder, but still.

Have a look on their site to see what else they are breaking.

How about an undamaged 34,000 mile F400 that only needed an exhaust?

It really makes you think.

Can these things really be worth less than the sum of their parts?

To break that 308GT4 really is miserable.

The boot emblem on the Assetto Corsa looked in tact - they build 'em tough!

I've always been tempted to buy these of the salvage agents - I don't know if it would be worth the effort though.

There's lots of auto-erotica being broken there, but the one that caught my eye was the 330 ...

.... there's something amiss with the panels not being properly aligned, but come on .... I know a little classic car garage specialising in these old prancing horses that would turn that thing out as good as new by Christmas.

Thats the one I was on about! Compression down on 1 cylinder and a bit of rust was all that was wrong with it.

ALready been stripped I'm afraid.
