Hope someone can help here.

A good friend of mine has a 400i in his garage, (jealous, me? what gives you that idea), but he hasn't used it for about 18 months. The reason he gives is that he can't afford to get it serviced, says he's looking at £2500 plus for a service. This would be at a dealer in manchester. I think that it's a great shame that this car isn't being used and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good independent garage that could carry out the work, possibly a bit more economically than paying dealer labour rates. He lives near Lancaster.

I said that I would ask around for him, any information would be very hepful.

Thanks in anticipation.

If I can help your friend to transport the car to have this work completed, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Cheers folks, thanks for the info, anyone else, keep it coming. I'll give it about a week then I'll sort out all the info I can get and pass it on.

There may just be an ulterior motive in all this, if he gets it back on the road hopefully he'll take me out for a spin

i used to have a fairly ropey 400i a couple of years ago. i paid 5 grand for it and ran it for 2 years without too much grief.

the guy who looked after the car for me is my local mechanic who services my CL500 and my wife's c-class. he's also done bits and pieces on my lamborghinis. he's not a sportscar specialist, just a good mechanic with a sensible approach and prices. he was never fazed by any of the various issues that cropped up with my 400i. having worked on my car, i reckon he'd feel fairly confident about taking on most jobs on your mate's vehicle and i wouldn't be at all surprised if he got the car sorted for much less than you've been quoted elsewhere.

he's based near hampstead in london nw3, but doesn't charge hampstead money. the name of the garage is 'speedy motors'- ask for shahin and tell him david sherman recommended you. tel: 02074356203.

good luck

Depends where you are - Elias Elia (yes that's his name) runs Racing Technologies in Wandsworth. He and his brother have a wealth of expertiese in Ferraris and I've seen several 400s in there. He knows Karl Virdi too. Try Elias on 0208 874 8927

How about JMH in Holmes Chapel www.j-m-h.co.uk/
Or alternatively whilst not advertised as Ferrari specialist it might be worth a call to Mike at Sports and Classic www.sportsandclassic.com/ IIRC he used to work for Ferrari. They are in Mobberley near Knutsford. Well recommended.

I'll second Mike at Sports and classic. Top lad and knows his stuff. Definitely worth a call.
