3200 - Viewing Tomorrow
Discussion
Hi All,
I have done a few searches on here as to what to look for when viewing a 3200, but if poss would you be so kind as to give me a few more pointers please?
The car I am going to view tomorrow will be my first 3200.
It's an auto - Is there any financial difference to resale, or advantages / disadvantages, or noticeable performance differences?
The colour combi is Dark Blue metallic / Beige Leather.
It has FSH at Maranello / Bob Houghton / Auto Shield.
When should the cambelt service have been carried out (either 30k or every 3 yrs?)
When does the rust start to appear?
Any suspect noises I should be aware of on the test drive? (turbos, engine etc)
What oil should it use? - Is selenia 10-60 a must...and why?
Any other info would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jules.

How did the viewing go?
Hi,
It went well, it was the first 3200 I've been to see and I have to say that I was pleasently surprised. The general condition of the car was good and it drove well also. Had a brief moment of panic when the engine started revving of it's own accord whilst the car was stationary and in "P" mode, but the owner knew how to clear this, not sure if this is a common problem though. The car ticks over at idle at 1000rpm and am not sure if this is correct for the car? Plus it hunts a little, somewhere between 950rpm and 1200rpm. The other thing that I noticed was how urgent it would start to accelerate with just a dab of the throttle (from standstill), I've read that this is a trait of the pre-mid '00 cars and that there were software upgrades to rectify it, although if I have to be honest I didn't find it a problem.
I liked the interior although I think the quality of some of the controls, stalks and steering wheel let it down (the steering wheel reminded me of the one on a Fiat Coupe I owned a few years back, which was not unpleasent, but I expected something a little special from Maserati), the interior was tan leather, which compliments the dark blue exterior well, although I have to admit that it didn't grow on me as much as I thought from the pics.
Handling wise the car felt pretty good, however the steering feels a bit too light for the weight of the car, just meant I had to concentrate more. Cornering felt good for the type of car it is and the ride in general felt fine although not as "comfortable" (it is a GT) as I expected.
Performance - it felt quick, but not blisteringly quick, the auto box worked well, but there were a few occassions where it felt a little flat, from a standing start though it flew.
All in I was quite impressed and while it won't be delivering the thrills of my Cerbera, it should certainly deliver a bit more comfort and all weather ability.
Jules.
Youre brief moment of panic when the revs rose without any thottle input from you means that the throttle potentiometer is past its sell by date in my experience. £5 or £6 hundred quids worth depending where you source it from.
Tick over of 1000rpm is fine and normal.
How to get the best from the chassis and engine will in come with time. They are a car that you "grow" into for the best performance.
Turn the traction off and the sport mode on in the wet/damp and you'll have more thills than are healthly for you.

Thankyou both for your replies and information.
I think I will definitely try a manual before deciding.
Throttle Pots at £5-600 (seems steep), is that just for the parts or does that include replacing and setting up?
Jules.

Wouldnt put you off a 3200 but parts prices are steep.
The Alfa part which is the same from a late V6 GTV is the same.....£200 plus fitting, if you use your head (and the internet) you dont need to pay through the nose for parts.
Oh, manual is the way to go in my opinion, and watch out for rust! All the ones i saw had some form of rust....door bottoms, rear arches, boot lid and bonnet leading edge. This was the single thing that stopped me buying all the cars I saw.

Yes I know, and it always the parts you don't expect to be expensive that are, luckily there'll be a fair few alternative parts that can be fitted as per the Alfa recommendation. I own a TVR Cerbera (2nd one) so know all about expensive parts.....

What a waste of time, car was not at the dealers, even though I called yesterday to arrange to look at it today, then it turns out that someone has already put a 500 pound deposit on it pending finance.
Grrrr
Grrrr
How frustrating...... Back to the drawing board then. Do you have any others lined up to view?

No, not yet, will probably start looking seriously again after Christmas, I am quite happy to wait for the right car
'Bump'
I too have been toying with the idea of swaping the Cerb for a 3200. Having done a search or two on here would be interested to know what I should be looking for - Apart from condition, condition, condition!!!
Love my Cerb, but must be getting old and want a bit of GT touring that Mrs Smoke will drive with the lack of teeth shattering noise!
It's an itch that won't go away, especially now I've driven one, albeit only a short distance. I really wanted to hate it, but I loved it!
