Firstly, please excuse the breathtaking ignorance of the question.
I was out and about in the Mondial this weekend, and noticed a worrying development.
From cold there is definite pinking. This only continues for the first minute or maybe two from ignition, and when warm she runs beautifully.
So, several questions arise:

1) How worried should I be?
2) What should I do?
3) How much is Karl (or Joe or the like) going to relieve me of to make the problem go away?

regards,

Rich

Hi,

If its pinking when its cold that tells me that its running lean, which on a cold engine is not good. Advice is get it checked ASAP, I destroyed and engine round Donington that was pinking under load.

You've been warned.

Andy.

I have no direct experience with a Mondial, but I wonder if the mechanism for fuel enrichment when cold is not working properly (this could be a choke or mapping for the fuel injection). It could even be a faulty temperature sensor so that the fuelling system thinks the engine is warmer than it is (and hence doesn't supply more fuel when warming up).

Am I being too optimistic/hopeful if I'm comforted by this?

Have you had any fuel chnages, like lead replacement or using a different fuel.

355's could pink a bit on normal but would be fine on super. I'd go down the fuel route, but then again I don't know a real lot about mechanics.

What exactly does 'pinking' mean?

Predetonation of fuel. Fuel ignites too early in the combustion cycle.

Makes a tinkling sound.

Destroys engines.
