Gallardo vs. R8 in CAR
Discussion
Bought car today (not a usual purchase) and there was a nice article on the Audi R8, 997 and 2006 Gallardo. Fantastic photography I have to say. One statement caught my eye though: The R8, "...looks sensational...it's edgy without resorting to the origami creases of the Gallardo." They then go to call the Gallardo "dated."
I'm not sure about you, but while I like the pretty curves of the R8, it only looks like an uprated TT. Of course this may change when I see one in the flesh. In my eyes, the Gallardo still looks stunningly beautiful, and sharp, not a day old.
I also found the CAR article brown-nosed the Audi a bit too much. I mean it barely compared it to the Gallardo, and in most aspects where the Gallardo beat it they said wasn't important (the R8 was barely faster than the 997 Carrera S!). I think that despite the R8s keen pricing as standard, once packed with options it comes in at at least £90,000, and then there are many other cars in reach that make it look less special. You could have a 997 GT3, second hand Gallardo/Diablo or AMV8 prodrive for similar money.
Don't get me wrong, I think the R8 must be a great car. Just the reaction by the auto press was rather over the top in my opinion. What do you all think?

I brought that mag too.
I thought they wanted to shock with some of their statements (although the R8 interior is very nice)
Plus I don't think they did a fair comparison so it left me wondering several things such as whether the ride was as good as lambo's and did they rate it above or below the lambo etc etc.
Plus I think it is too pricey once you spec it up, it probably won't be that much cheaper I know which I'd rather have!

You seem suprised by a British car magazine kissing Teutonic árse. 'tis classic NGC (New German Car) behaviour, wherein the press will rave about it, spouting all manner of tat from now until the next NGC. Until then, everything will be "...not quite as good as the German offerings...". Tiff Nedell is a prime one for this. Expect lots more when he gets his mits on the Audi...
"Alfa 159? Not as good as the 3-Series."
"Maserati Gran Sport? Not as good as the M6"
"Secret to eternal life? Bettered by the 911"
"World peace and a cure for cancer? I'd rather have an M3..."

LMAO!!
I have been running a post in General Gassing to find out what people would prefer to drive: Spyker C8 - 997 GT3 - DB9 - R8. This is on a hypothetical free weekend in the car of your choice basis.
R8 is running dead last!
I'm not surprised by the reviews - it's obviously a good new car. Journo's do not give a level opinion on these things.

Wouldn't a fairer price comparison be a 997S with powerpack? I suspect the selections would be more in favour of the Audi if that were the choice....

I think we've just done this on another thread.......

I've put a slightly different point across here, besides that doesn't make the point any less valid.

What would anyone rather have, an Audi or a Lambo ?
Who the hell is going to pay £85k plus for an Audi ??????
Remember the NSX, great car, but who the hell was going to pay £70k for a Honda??
R.

But a Lambo costs £120k+ I think Audi have a little more cache than Honda did when the NSX was launched, and the sales targets are pretty low so I suspect they'll find owners for all they make....
You are right - these things will be sold out for the first 8 months, and then people will start dropping off the list as the novelty wears off. That said, I think this is the most important new sports car in years, and would love to drive one. No doubt it is an awesome weapon, but at this level, pretty much everything is.
I would have thought that it is really the matter of whether the car is good or not that should be the issue here. It is a bit early to tell but the initial press reaction has been favourable, time will tell. I get the feeling that a lot of buyers in this market are buying badge rather than car, I suppose those folks walk around with their clothes inside out so that you can see the label, and dont detach the price tag either. Few drivers have the real capability to take these cars to their limit, in the same way as most 4x4s never go off road.

I think you've hit the nail on the head once the novelty has gone then they'll move onto something else. I know there's a long waiting list, was toying with the idea of buying and selling for a premium, too late now but do you think they'll go for a premium when they first come out ?

Wonder if Audi may have had any influence over how their 2 cars were judged in comparison?
Don't know how much / if any influence the supplying manufacturer may have in situations like this...

Have you seen how much space in the motoring press is dedicated to Audi/VW advertisments?
Exactly...

I was disappointed in the "comparison". Did you notice that the Gallardo was an 04 or 05 car? (centre brake light above rear window, not in spoiler). So it wasn't a comparison at all. Obviously CAR grabbed a couple of locals' cars they could find in the vicinity of the R8 launch and took a few photos while they were driving around. That's not a test.
OT now, but CAR has lost its way, IMO. It takes itself too seriously and it trying to be too cool. More substance please...

Most people are looking for about £5k over, but that will evaporate pretty quickly - I am guessing 3 months after the first deliveries start.
