black number plates help
Discussion
hi everyone, just a quick question...nowadays like when i drive round, mainly central london, i see cars with black uk number plates, are these allowed, i tried askin round and people said they are allowed on old cars only, but thought i seen so many new cars with black plates, just thought i would ask here before buying the plates and getting 3 points or some fine, thanks
Silver on Black plates look great on black cars IMHO
I had some on my black Gallardo, and drove around the UK for 5k miles with them on with no problems at all.
The first time I set foot in Wales in October last year some Welsh git coppers pulled me 5 miles after the Severn Bridge and gave me a £30 fine + producer.
"Was your car built before 1973 Sir?"
"I'm not sure Officer, I bought it 2nd hand and that plate came on it"
(well, if he was going to ask cocky arse questions, he's going to get a cocky arse answer!)
I'm back on standard plates now as I cant be arsed with the grief + someone said the black ones looked wank!

I've never understood how something could be legal on some cars but not on others. Surely whatever makes them inappropriate on a modern car also makes them inappropriate on an old car.
As laws and requirements get updated in line with advances you can't realisticly make them retrospective so you always end up with different rules for older vehicles.
Try making older cars keep up with current emissions regs for instance, just not practicle.
Can you fit a cat on 1903 Benz?
Or airbags and ABS on a blower Bentley?
Agreed, they do look great.
I think the main issue here is (aside from them not being reflective) all down to the Bib in question.
How many will actually pull you over ? Would a common or garden panda car pull you up ? Would they know the procedure / letter of the law to have the confidence to do it ? I doubt it.
This only leaves the proper traffic coppers, again if they spot you and you're driving in a proper manner would they bother ?
Even if they do, most tend to be into cars in one way or another and if you don't act like a t**t and explain you're just coming back from a photo shoot or a similar blag you should be fine.
