Best buy - 328, 348 or Jalpa?
Discussion
Hi i have a mate who isthinking of buying an exotic car for weekends he has a budget of about 30,000. He has been looking at ferrai 328 and 348 as well as lambo jalpa which would be the better bet.I have owned a 348 but want to stay impartial on the matter as i had a bad one ,but i know there are good ones about too.
The Ferrari 328 costs a lot less to run than the 348 and it's much simpler so there's less to go wrong. Also, for £30K you'll get a 328 that's near the end of the long 308-328 development cycle and therefore fully sorted. Alternately you'll be looking at a relatively early 348 and all the issues that came with it, unless it's been retrospectively updated with the various improvements that were incrorporated into new cars as development evolved. If It were my £30K I'd go fro a 328, but obviously I don't know what your friend's disposable income is like - I'd feel uncomfortable with a 348 based on what I'm prepared to set aside for running costs. I have no knowledge of the Lamborghini Jalpa so I'll leave that one to the experts. For loads of advice on Ferraris, try Club Scuderia - www.clubscuderia.com/forum/index.php
Depends what floats his boat.
The 328 is the prettiest and could hold its value best. Probably cheapest to run too. Likely to be the slowest.
348 will be the quickest I would expect. If he likes the look, and can find a good one (budget's about right) and afford to keep it in good nick, it's likely to be the best option.
Jalpa - never been 100% on the looks front. I would guess this would be the most costly to run, and probably the middle in terms of performance. Much rarer than the other two, but that can have its downsides (running costs).
If it were me, I'd be having a go in one of each and seeing which I liked. But as an "exotic" purchase, I might be tempted to try and find a Jalpa...

I think the Jalpa will have the highest running costs, with the 328 the lowest.
I looked at a 328 and a 348 when I was looking. Always loved the 308/328 shape but when I sat in one I just did'nt feel comfortable and found the pedals too offset, so got a 348. But the 328 is and always will be a beautiful car.
As Murph said, best to try out each one and see which one you like the best.

I concur with the other comments. The 348 isn't really that pretty, but will be quick. Whereas the 308/328 is a classic look. The Jalpa is no where near as pretty but is very much a car of its era.
My Jalpa hasn't been difficult to own or run. You'll have to work a bit harder to find parts, being so rare. Only 410 were made and 34 were RHD, so they're hardly common. But it isn't an impossible task. Also there is nothing complicated in there, it is a very simple car to work on.
If you look on the LCUK site, you'll see that 30K will get you a mint Jalpa.
To some extent how much effort is he prepared to put in? If it isn't a problem then a Jalpa would be ideal. Whereas there are plenty of places selling 328/348 spares out there.

I had a 328 and it was a great car(pic). Great looks and style. And i miss it still. However if it power that ya friend is after it will always be in the back of his mind that the 328 lacks it compared to newer ferraris, and will sell it quite soon for a more powerful model. If he isn't bothered about high power then the 328 will be enough of a all round ferrari for him.
Also if he is 6ft or over then three things will be most apparent. The gear stick will be constantly against his left leg (RHD), and his head will almost be touching the roof (that's if he is 6ft). And finally if its a GTS model then there is no chance in driving the car in any type of comfort with the roof behind he seat.
To conclude, if the dude is less than six foot and don't care much about high power then the Ferrari 328 is a great classical beautiful ferrari. And with simple fool proof macanics as well.

Well they do say beauty is in the eye of the beholder . Surely the 348 is one of the best looking Ferraris of all time , theres just so many things to look at . Id trade my Lotus for one in in flash if i thought it would be as econmical and reliable on a daily basis .
