Diablo 6.0 short ratio box
Discussion
Thanks Mike, and here is the answer.
When the SV was launched, it had the short ratio gearbox fitted as standard, hence the revised top speed of 186 mph.
So many customers realised the overall benefits of increased in gear acceleration times that Lamborghini made three gear ratio options available from model year 98.
The shortest of these ratios gave a 186 mph top speed, the next was 199-200 mph, and the tallest was geared for 212 mph.
This was ably demonstrated to the press at a 'safety day' held by Lamborghini at Nardo, with the full range of models and ratios available, to show to the press how fast and safe the Diablo range was, and several Diablo 6.0 reached over 215 mph recorded and verified with the tallest of the ratios. (I have the pics and video for proof)
Incidentally, all 6.0 SE's have the short ration box fitted as standard, making it aguably the most desirable of the 6.0s, as long as it is not brown in colour!

Ruttboy.

alan, did the various gearboxes have a major effect on acceleration on the test?
I recall the difference between the 'sprint' 'box and the tallest ratios was profound. About half a second to 62mph and a second and a half to 100.
One of the reasons why the SV is such a beast.
Alan?
Mike, I think you are right with your figures.
Always felt the VT was just cruising to the horizon opposed to the SV headbutting it, although I am not saying the VT was slow, just pointing out the difference.
However, a 6.0 with the short box was devastating.
I always prefered driving the short boxes, as you could often utilise the extra acceleration, but very rarely could you wind the car up to V-max, so top speed was acedemic until the advent of fly-by-wire throttle bodies.
Cheers,
Ruttboy.
