Coming back to Italy in a week or so, this time we flew to Verona as we wanted to spend Easter at Lake Garda .... But for the flying visit , thinking Bologna ... Can anyone recommend a good hotel , more boutique than mainstream ....

Jon,
Bologna is a stunning city, The Grand Hotel Baglioni is fantastic but pricey.(only 5 star in the area). Alternatively the hotel Tre Vecchi right in the centre is nice but not too over the top price wise. Theres underground multistorey car parks near both.

Yeah the Baglioni is where I stay - best hotel in town - and very central.

how much of a flying visit?

iirc the BA flight gets in quite late
Last time I just stayed at the Holiday Inn at the airport
The airport is on the North side of town so in the morning is only ~25 minutes by taxi away from Lamborghini

Just got back from Bologna last weekend, stayed in a hotel between Bologna and Modena, well closer to Modena tho. Can't remember the name of the hotel but is literally only 2 minutes from a Ferrari garage. Very nice city. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Cheers chaps, deciding whether to fly in on the Sunday with a view to spending Monday between Pagani (closed at Easter) and then some time with Valentino in a SL

The rates honestly don't look bad ... Is it worth spending a long weekend ; i.e is Bologna a beautiful city (Saturday through Monday night) , or will a early Sunday morning flight then fly back 18:00 considering I need to fit in Lamborghini and Pagani (potentially Ferrari, I know that's blasphemy)

Is Lamborghini open on the Saturday ? Will follow up with Francesca/Cristina

I wasn't that impressed with Bologna. Thought it a bit industrial.

There are some nice enough places to stay just down the road from the Lamborghini factory (though they are more like pensions than "boutique" hotels). And Pagani's not that far from there either.

If you wanted to make a longer stay of it by a couple of days, Florence is only a couple of hours down the road. Quite possibly the most beautiful city in the World IMO. And some great hotels on the river.

We just got back from Italy yesterday. 2 nights in Bolgna at the Grand Hotel Baglioni - not what a 5 star hotel should be imo. Room was OK but breakfast was really awful. I would stay out of town and visit for a half day which is really all you need in Bologna imo.

Ha Ha! Yes forgot to mention that - the breakfasts do truly suck (Unless you like cake for breakfast!)

Better to go to one of the Coffee shops on the square round the corner - get a decent breakfast there instead.

It's true that there's not much to do/see in Bologna!

I thought Bologna was stunning - especially the huge market square (same as all Italian cities) and the old church (they ran out of money building it 400 yrs ago and it never got finished). But I agree the hotels rated star wise are nowhere near the standard of what they should be anywhere else!
Make sure you have satnav for Pagani - its a pig to find in an industrial estate. Took me ages. There's a British technician whose been with Pagani since the start works there. Look for his battered Rangerover parked outside with Union Jacks all over it.

I also stayed at the Golden Tulip in Bologna which is excellent - similar to a Holiday Inn and 15mins walk from the centre. Is almost brand new with its own big car park - forgot about that one. That might be the best bet Jon

The following hotel is at Fossalta on the Via Emiglia near to Modena - Modena is a good bit cooler than Bologna imo! The short drive up to Sant' Agata is fairly easy and you are just a few km's along the main road from Pagani and if you really have to go to Maranello, that's not too far away either.

I don't think the hotel has much in the way of 'very secure' parking but the rooms are OK, the breakfast a little more then just mediocre and it suffers only from claiming to be 4-star...

just back from Barcelona (it rained everyday!) and I've just seen your post and have only scanned through it, so if you are just flying out for a day or so and are in a hire-car you should be OK I guess!
