I've got around £40K for a motor. Will be my only car (apart from the Motorbike) so will need to be relaible and do the shopping run. Mileage only around 8000 pa.

Is the Maserati a good bet?

Barry,

It's a thumbs-up from me... I've had my Coupe since Oct 2005, and since then have done over 20,000 miles in the beast, is my main car, and I use it as my daily driver... been rocket solid reliable....

I personally love driving it every time, the attention it gets is always positive, the car interior is a great place to be.. It's fast, has a lovely v8 engine. I have the CambioCorsa Box (flappy paddles), and love it.... not cheap to run though, servicing costs and petrol consumption are a tad on the high side, but you won't mind for the pleasure you'll get...

You should be able to find a good example (with a warranty) for your £40K...

Why not come to the next East London meet (Beckton, Sun morning 6th May - it'll soon be posted up in the 'events' section), and I'll happily answer your questions. We usually have one or two Masers turn up. I'll even take you for a spin (you'll get a better feeling for the Coupe than on any test drive...)

Cheers,
Johnnyboy

Mine is my daily drive. No problems - brilliant fun, I'm on my second one and a third on order.

thumbup Gets a strong thumbs-up from me too. Had mine for 2 years. Not a daily commuter, (Got a Suzuki SX4 for that) - but every opportunity to drive my 4200 is a joy. Done over 20,000 miles - Reliable too - although you have to be very choosy. Some Cambio gearbox's can be harsh. Servicing is reasonable thru' Dick Lovett Cardiff - bought the car from Meridien Modena, down Dorset way. Take your time test-driving / choosing and you will not go wrong for £40k - should get you a decent 05. Look at bodywork - as easily stone-chipped..

Wish I could say the same for mine. Its on an 03 plates, 6-months out of warranty and the gearbox is shot. At 24k miles! This follows a clutch and failed paddle hydraulic actuators at 19k miles, and new catalysts at 17k miles. Some of this repaired under warranty thank goodness but still meant the car was off the road for a few weeks..... Its a great car, but fataly flawed by poor quality and unreliable mechanicals IMHO. The garage is quoting me £5k+ to strip & repair and £7k+ for a new gearbox. Not covered by warranty. Rediculous.

My coupe is my daily driver and has been fine. Not great in stop start traffic but great fun every where else. Expect c16mpg, £1k a year to service and a new clutch at 20 to 30k miles. Factor in tyres (15k miles out of my last set) and brakes (25k miles and Ok - i think) like any other car. Yes you will have the odd issue here and there but then what make doesn't...? The warranty will cover these, but make sure you put in the cost of an after market warranty if you plan to keep one outside the makers 3 year warranty period (I just paid £1.5k for a 3 year warranty). Final piece of advice... go for it... !

I would echo most of the above and certainly go for it, but as has been said before, take your time choosing, especially if you want a CC box as not all are the same. Having said that, with £40k you should be able to get a good low mileage '05 by which stage I think most of the issues had been resolved. I use mine as a daily driver and have absolutely no regrets, there is nothing to touch it for the money.

Sorry to hear about the problems Scottydog.. sounds like you got the runt of the litter... Was the car maintained / serviced by previous owner - or did you have it from new ? I would expect clutch issues, but a whole gearbox !! Have the garage offered you any assistance in sorting the matter out with Maserati. I have had fantastic back-up from Dick Lovett. Even when the boot lid chrome tarnished last year (just out of warranty) - it was replaced FOC.

Thanks Mate for your support. I've escalated it by email to Stratstone management and to Maserati GB. We will see what happens next. I'm mightely unhappy with progress so far. All that Stratstone Little Aston seem to want to do is get their courtesy car back without fixing the fundamental problem. Not good.

I would go into prospecgtive purchase with open eyes.

I had a 53 plate 4200 GT and it had to have its gearbox replaced at 13k miles.

Also, had to sell in the end, because the dealer could not fix a persistent aircon leak, couldn't tolerate wet feet and carpets all the time.
