Guys – I’m looking for some volunteers to help out at a classics & super car rides day we are holding on Sunday 3rd June. Taking part at the Fox & Hounds pub in Fair Oak near Southampton

It is to raise cash for the Cystic Fibrosis Fund and is part of our annual Le Mans fund raising month.

I need drivers to commit for a couple of hours to take members of the public out for a short ride in your P&J. The three time slots I need to fill are 10-00am to 12-00 midday, 12-00 midday to 2-00pm and 2-00pm to 4-00pm. A driver can of course choose to do more than one time slot if they wish.

My target is for 15ish cars for each 2 hour slot. Please email me through my profile if you are interested in helping out.

*** Would it be possible to have a sticky??

I don't want to be a nanny but:

A word to the caution, on this event and organisers of other chartiable rides, if you are selling a specific ticket in return for a ride then you are inside hte Public carriage officers hire and reward laws. Any private vehicle that is used for carrying passengers for hire or reward needs to be registered and inspected by the public carriage office and the driver needs to be licensed by the council otherwise you can be effectively prosecuted as a private minicabber (yes even in a gallardo!!!)

Secondarily, your private motor insurance specifically excludes use for hire or reward, even though the money is going to charity and not to you, the fact payment is made will effectively make your passenger fare paying and void your insurance.

Therefore:

I advise any pher's organising these kind of events to ensure that they can obtain a exemtion for the event from the PCO regs.

Drivers participating should contact their insurance companies and explain the event and check they will be covered in the event of a claim.

The organisers should also take out a public liabilityt insurance policy to indemnify themselves, since you are selling the tickets you will be held liable in the event one of the drivers has a major off that isn't insured.

Apologies if everyone already knows this, but we live in a nanny state its better to be safe than sorry, and unfortunately "its for charity" will probably fall on deaf ears if you end up in front of the beak.

I think they are a great way to raise money for charity, but i think in our litigation happy culture you can't be too careful.

good luck with the event.

That is great advice. Thanks. Wasn't aware of the PCO issue. I'll look into it. Yhe passengers will be entering a raffle from which a draw will be made and prizes will be won. The drivers will be offering rides free of charge to all comers but raffle ticket holders will get first option!

Thanks again

Hi Paul

I think you are fine in that case, if its a raffle or discretionary donation scheme then its not a problem for the PCO, they only take a interest if you say charge £10 for a 10 minute ride in a ferrari, since then its technically a fare paying passage and comes under PCO rules.

So anyone thinking of starting a murcileago minicab operation, note that thanks to the central exhausts there is nowhere to put the minicab license plate

Try explaining the concept of taking kids for a ride in your car for exchange of cash to help needy people to an Indian Call Centre (I'm with Admiral!!)

UPDATE – NEW DATE CONFIRMED SUNDAY 10th JUNE

After discussions with the main organiser and the landlord of the Fox & Hounds we have decided it would be best to move this event to the following weekend. The reserve date if the weather is unkind is now Sunday 1st July.
This is due to the original date clashing with the Goodwood Breakfast Club Supercar meet. A lot of owners showed an interest but were keen to go to Goodwood instead!

Many thanks
