This is mainly for the benefit of new PHe'rs who haven't followed the topics.

a Number of SCAMMERS are now targeting PH classifeds offering a number of exotics such as lamborghini's, ferrari's, porsches and mercs at seemingly Bargain prices.

This is a scam, non of the cars are genuine.

I know its common sense, but you would be SHOCKED at how many people still get carried away at the prospect of the bargain and get taken in.

if you are BUYING a private sale always, always take in mind the following:

1: Get a HPI check done, but DO NOT RELY on the REG, a common trick is changing REG plates to a identical car (cloning) that turns up clean on HPI.

2: get the VIN number and check it with the Manufacturer, your local dealer should be able to help here.

3: get the car inspected. I know its tempting to skip it, but if the car has been crashed, stolen, or is a scam the buyer will be very reluctant to let you show it to a dealer who will spot it a mile off. this can sake you lots of money.

4: When paying for the vehicle, do not pay by cheque, bankers draft or cash, go with the seller, the car and all the documents to your local bank and make a CHAPS instant payment into the sellers UK account (chap payments are like BACS but clear instantly). the seller has instant cleared funds and you can leave the bank with the car and title, in the event of money laundering, the car being bent etc the bank has at least the ability to record and trace the transaction which at least gives you some protection, if a seller is dodgy they will not want that.

5: if the seller offers to use ebay, escrow or another system "for your protection" walk away. its a standard scam.

6: if you are buying a car from Europe, do not buy a unseen car, if you have not imported a car before find a reputable import dealer to do the transaction for you. if you want to do it yourself, the safest place to buy is germany, all dealers have to be registered.

7: Paying for a car: open an account with someone like moneycorp, you buy your euros in advance and you can ring up when you arrive at the dealer and authorise the instant payment by Telegraphic transfer (same as chaps really). then you should be able to drive straight away.

remember: if something is TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, it ALWAYS IS, if a exotic is much below 10 percent of private sale price a dealer would have snapped the car up in a hour, therefore if you see cheap exotics for sale they are either a scam, stolen, or a write-off/rebuild and untradable.

PORTECT YOURSELF:

Get a copy of the sellers passport page, driving license and proof of address, you would be shocked how many people try and sell me lambo's and fezzas they don't even own - they are either rented "a friends" or plain dodgy. if the seller does not have goot title to the car then you will lose any money you pay for the car and the car will go back to the owner. there are a LOT of very complicated frauds going on over the sale of exotics at the moment because its easy money for thieves, therefore you need to really keep your eyes peeled.

Basic rule is: Don't part with the cash until you get the car and you've checked the car through.

ADVICE FOR SELLERS:

Don't part with the car until you have CLEARED FUNDS: the best option is the CHAPS method detailed above.

Don't let the seller give you say part cash and a cheque for the balance, the cheque will bounce and you will never see the cash again.

Bankers drafts are easier to forge than cash, they are WORTHLESS. don't release the car until its cleared under ANY circumstances.

If you are uncomfortable with viewings, get a couple of friends to be round your house at the time, if you go out on a demo drive, ask them to follow you in a second car, even dealers get clocked over the head and chucked in lay-bys. so be careful. if the scammers have got their eyes on us, and you have a high value car for sale on PH then start expecting "odd" calls.

Remember, if both buyers and sellers have nothing to hide and are honest, then there should be no bad feelings about it. if they get annoyed or pressure you then its because they are up to no good.

if you are a first time exotic buyer, its REALLY easy to get carried away and over-excited and the prospect of your new car and miss the warning signs, always always take a cynical friend to hang on to your coat and make sure you don't get tucked up.

Brilliant Advice - Sold a 645ci Convertible a few months ago and the amount of blatantly scam phone calls i had were unbelievable, i only use the CHAPS option as i have previously been scamned with a dodgy bank draught while selling an Elise.

Shouldn't this be made a sticky?
It could prove invaluable for someone.

Nice summary. I take it that 360 Spyder for £45 which should have been at least £30K more that was on PH a while ago was an example?

Not strictly true dont expect the funds to appear the next second in your account. They will put the transfer request in a queueing system up until 14.30 (the cut off time for same day transfers) and then they process them through. I do dozens of these a month (at £25 a pop )and the norm is the cleared (and drawable) funds tend to hit your account between 16.00 and 17.00 that day.

well my point is with chaps is its about as safe as its going to get unless the bank are in on the job, but if you don't specifically ask for a CHAPs same day payment they can will do a standard electronic transfer which can take 3-5 days.

other possible forms of "instant payment"

1: 1 Kilo Bags of Cocaine
2: Gold Bullion
3: Conflict Diamonds
4: WMD
5: Peerages
