Still not sure if we are going to use motorail to get down to the Columbus in August, read quite a few negative comments about motorail and don't know if it is still their rule you have to put the roof down on convertibles (if so it's a definite non starter)

Soooo we think we may have a more relaxing drive down there and have an overnight stop.

Think we will aim for somewhere around Lyon as a stopover, any hotels folk can recommend in the area?

Chateau de Bagnols. V. highly recommended. Some say it's the best 5 star chateau type hotel in France and possibly best vineyard hotel in world. Don't know about that but it is certainly a lovely place to stay. Used it a few times.

Chateau de Bagnols - seconded, they even clean your car for you! Very near the autoroute and an excellent Michelin starred restaurant...

I can highly reccommend this place

CHATEAU DES COMTES DE CHALLES
247, montée du Château
73190 CHALLES LES EAUX

REasonable rates, walled courtyard parking out of the way of town, and the food is excellent and reasonably priced. It is genuinely a chateau with fantastic views across the valley. Also it's an ideal spot to pick up the next day and hit the route napoleon for Monaco
