A mate of mine has about 50K to spend on his first Ferrari. He had his heart set on a 360, but is concenred that it would get him on to the bottom rung. I've suggested that he may be better getting a good 355 for the same money.

Does anyone have any reason for going for one over the other?
Are there any decent specialists in the SE that he could go and speak to?

Thanks for the info.

F355.

Not just a car but rolling, sculpted perfection: for so recent a car and despite it's relative ubiquity, my preferred work of automotive art.

Event motoring par excellence, particularly a Vidal version.

For road use, nothing quite fizzeth the blood like this one during high chat.

If you jump to £55k there are lots of good 360's around - 1999/2000 cars with 25k miles+ on them often can go for around £55k.

I know its "just" another £5k, but if his heart is really set on a 360 then I am sure he can find that money ?

Having owned them both I'd always go for a 355 over the 360 - somehow for me it was just a more special experience - and as they are a bit cheaper I'd definately go for the 355!

The 360 is more modern but probably wont be a classic per se. The 355 is looking/feeling a bit antiquated but is a classic in the making. The advantgage that I see in the 360 is that it still has modern ferrari design language (a la 430 etc) and so you dont feel like you are on your way to attend a classic car rally as you do in a 360.

For mid 50s your friend can get into a good 2000 car with 30k miles

gotta agree with charlie 360. just got 360 spider but 355 spider felt more special. maybe having flat battery for two weeks didnt help my decision though. still a cracking looking car but probably get a better 355 with 50K they handle a lot better too. good luck

F355 was a classic before production started. A truly, truly (did I see truly - TRULY) magnificent car.

If owning one doesn't make you want to wet yourself every day, buy a Honda and a cardigan.

However, don;t go spending 50k on one. 45k tops. You'll get a very good car for that money (regardless of which model you go for - men got for GTBs, girls for Spider. Everyone else GTS'. - if that doesn't get some posts nothing will smile).

Do a search on clubscuderia.co.uk and you'll find a ton of buying advice.

Depends on your friends attitutde to driving and cars. A sweeping generalization I know but the 355 would suit someone that preferred mechanical, non technology driven (traction control etc)cars that are also more fragile vs the newer, more every day user friednlyness, faster point to point ease of the 360. As for looks the 355 wins hand down for me every time. Overall, when I bought my 355 3.5yrs ago, there was the overlap with LHD 360s but I chose the 355 having driven both. I have always been very happy with that decision.

Another point your friend amy want to consider is that it generally is better to have the last incrantion of an older model as it generally is the most sorted of the lot i.e. 308QV, 355 Fiorano, 360 CS. There are definitely people that would argue against the above but I think as buyers most try and get the latest model they can afford.
