how do dry sumps work.

My dad has just got the maserati Grand sport and is very happy with it,
I dont no weather its me missing something hear, but i just cant work out how it can have a dry Sump.
I can only think that its like that so that it give its self the perfect amount of oil, but cant quite get my head around it?
Please Please help me.
