Hi folks

Further to my thread about the valves hitting the pistons I've nearly finished dismantling everything in order to remove the engine.

Not sure on a few issues;

- disconnecting the exhaust just after the turbo, man this is awkard/difficult, got a few removed but the top ones? Remove lambda sensors to make access possible? Had to cut down an 8mm allen key to do the "easy" ones.

- how do you go about undo'ing the bellhousing from the engine? a couple of those hex bolts are far up and appear to be mission impossible?

Anything else I'm missing?

Many thanks
Steven

hi thong

found my workshop manual and it seems to suggest that engine and box must come out as one. hadn't considered dropping the engine and box out the bottom of the car, only got a trolley jack and engine crane to work with, so out the top for me.

looks like i'll need to try something magical to get at those tricky exhaust bolts. is it possible to remove just the engine or would mating the g/box back up be a nightmare? don't think i can get the bellhousing bolts which are in the middle anyhow...

cheers!

The engine and gearbox are supposed to come out of the top of the engine bay, i not sure whether you have enough room to pull the engine forward, off the gearbox to lift the engine out.

I am not sure you can drop the engine out of the bottom of the car because there is brace that goes across the bottom of the bellhousing. This means dropping the subframe, yuk

It is very simple to lift the engine out of the engine bay, just you have to be very careful and clearance is tight.

If you need any help give me a call 01732 835692 - my name is Mathew

cheers matthew - good to know it has to come out as one unit.

these things always take longer the first time you attempt them and some little things can seem impossible at the time!

hope to get it out before the weekend and inspect the damage :-(

I've been taking photos as I go along so I can post them all up when I'm done.

cheers

Good luck and stick with it. I am sure you can manage thsi job, after all it is only a car. Has anybody else done this at home, who can share tips and gotchas?
I was inspired to drop engine and box from my 911 after reading online article. I did the job by myself with trolley jack and axle stands, just as many others had before me.
Glad to hear you are taking pictures, maybe you can post a tech article when it is done?

well, that was a fun job. i've taken a few engines out of different cars and i can tell you that this one was significantly harder. the design and layout or engine bay and engine really isn't great. you need to disassemble a heck of a lot just to get the engine out and everything seems to be as awkward as possible.

it'll be fun putting it back in, that's for sure...
