Just a check with my fellow Italian Exotica owners, whats the biggest bill you've had to pay for work done to your motor?
Just had Major Service/Clutch/Oil Leaks/Steering Column (out of warranty!!!) done on mine (Maserati Spyder) and the bill was an eye-opener! Lets just say it was nearly 5 figures! I could have part ex'd and got a Gransport for that! Never mind!
What the consensus on owning an exotic long term? Is it just the done thing or are there way around paying big bills over time? I do appreciate that these cars are hand made etc and it is part and parcel of the whole "experience" but what do other PH'ers do?!

There's no getting around paying bills simply because you want to keep the car in tip top condition.
What I've done in the past with all my cars not just the itallians is to find a mechanic who I trust and who's recomendation is based reputation. I use the main dealers to the basic servicing for the stamp in the book and any extra work highlighted at this point I normally get a specialist to undertake as the labour rates are cheaper.
With the Itallian stuff there's a couple of well respected indy's which are a good option if you don't want to use the main dealers. Their stamps are known in the industry by most owners so selling with their service history is normally fine.

Hi Joe,
Didn't see yours last week when I was down, but in answer to your query. Yes main dealer servicing partly for peace of mind partly for easy recourse if something wasn't done right, partly for ease (courtesy cars etc), partly for long term resale reasons.
The key thing is to factor in the cost when purchasing the car e.g Keeping a car for 3 years add in warranty and service costs to the price to get an overall cost of ownership that way it only hurts a little bit...
My tip would be to go and get quotes for the full price of servicing - bear in mind that there is extra stuff required at 2 yrs and 4yrs old etc on top of regular service price !
Cheers

I picked mine up a week last Saturday and asked for the paperwork for the 120pt check etc etc
The bill invoiced to the sales side of the dealership was for £4719+Vat. This included the 120pt check, 30k service and replacement rear lower suspension arms. Ouch. It's now going back for 2 days next week to have the front suspension taken apart and the front bushes/seals replaced as it 'grinds' when going over speedbumps, 2 days work again paid for by the dealer.

Occasionally transfer and have a look on the Italian side! Big bills will get me running back to the safety of Pork ownership. Just sold my '02 996 C2, and having owned from new, have a full history record, with all my receipts on my desk. Just totted up the bills, for 5.5 years of ownership and 82000 miles, the total for everything excluding tyres, was £6346.34 plus VAT. the pre delivery prep, 6k service, fix window seals and a years warranty was invoiced to the seller at £8960+vat

Hopefully the new GT3 will be as cheap!

Might leave the Italian exotica for a little longer....or take my bank manager out for a few more lunches!

I don't understand the needless posts of my service cost x, my bill was only Y. Surely its better to look at the total cost of ownership of the car over its life, service, warranties, depreciations, consumables (tyres, clutch etc), cost of finance, even petrol if you're that bothered.
I'm sure my maser is twice as bad on mpg than an M3, M5, 911 etc so that could make the service costs irrelevant if one puts in the miles !
Then when looking at the TCO see if you're happy with it or not for that car.

The biggest bill for most is an invisible one: depreciation. Service/repairs usually pale into insignificance against it.
Never mind a new clutch and big service on the Diablo eh mate!!
I've had bigger bills on other cars. I figure if you've taken the plunge to buy lumpy cars, it's a bit late to worry about skinning farts to run them.bosscerbera said:
