I am looking at earlier (1999/2000 cars) and spoke to a specialist about a 1999 car they have for sale, good spec / colour etc.

One comment he made got me wondering "drives very well for a 99 car"

Its an F1, which I know earlier ones are quite clunky, but later F1 software can be added. It has a full ferrari history and great options, so very interested.

First production runs of cars often have niggles, but after 7 years you would expect these to have been sorted, esp as its had a full Ferrari history.

Its a 200 mile round trip so can't just pop over & drive it.

Any comments welcome.

Agree early car should be sorted now he was more than likely just meaning that this particular example drove well as I expect some are very ropey after 8 yrs these days. Early F1 was IMO not very nice to drive even the later 360 F1 I drove was not great IMHO the 360CS is the best F1 on the 360 range.
At present I have a manual 360 but may upgrade to 360cs if I dont go the F430 route.
Good luck on your search.

Some F-cars have been hammered by self drive hirers and at 2 years have had 30 different drivers each trying to get the most out of the car, whereas others cars have been nurtured by 3-4 owners over 7 or 8 years-boy can you tell the difference. When a specialist Ferrari outfit drove my car a few weeks ago, the chief tech said it felt like the best 360 (non Strad..) he'd driven. Said it was increadibly tight and tacked well and inspired confidence. A bad one feels like it will throw you off the road and will knock and clunk from the ball joints etc.

I had a 2000 f1 and as long as long as its had the upgraded software, it should be fine. i had no issues with mine and and it drove well. early ones where a pain to reverse but you soon got the hang of it.

Just wanted to check that the latest F1 software can be added to a 99 car? Thought I had better check before going any further !

Its done 20k miles, full Ferrari history and is an Ferrari owners club members ex-car, so I would assume looked after and at 20k miles its enough to have had niggles sorted out.

Latest software can be added but it does mean removal of the TCU. If the cars had a clutch at a main dealer it may have been changed but the only way to know is to look at the numbers on the TCU. You might be able to get the same info using an SD2.

You can also have the Strad software installed but some may find the change to aggressive for normal use.

Whatever you do get a PPI done, I bought my car from an Indy and even though it was checked over etc it blew an oil seal in the first week. Luckily the warranty covered everything and after the work had been carried out it ran better than ever. It never used a drop of oil while I owned it which i put down to the rebuild by the excellent mechanic who fixed the oil seal problem.

There's obvious things to check but I'd suggest doing a search on here, Club Scuderia or FCHAT.

My 360 was my favourite car, it ran without any problems apart from the initial oil seal.

Good luck and if you want any other advice drop me an email with your number as it's easier to chat through things on the phone.

I have one of the first 360s to leave the factory in 1999. Its now on 112,000 km and I've done most of those in the past 5 years yes

Its always been looked after by Verdi since the day I got it. According to Karl it drives miles better than many of the later cars he gets in. Its still as tight as a 17 year old lass in spite of commuting through London traffic every single day yikes

Where can I get the strad f1 software put on the car? Is this something that Verdi can do as I am planning on taking my new toy (when it arives in a week or two) there for a capristo? I found the changes a little too slow when testing the car.

Cheers

Speak to Karl at Verdi's. I think it involves having your TCU sent away for a week or two but I'm sure they'll give you a replacment so you can drive the car.

Basically the shift speed in normal mode will be the same as what you feel in sport now and the shift in sport will be similar to the strad.

You don't need to send it away, it is just reprogramming your ECU with the Strad software. I know R&D do it but they wanted big bucks (£1500 from memory) for doing it, I assume they've 'downloaded' it from a Strad and transfered it to a std 360. Supposed to be good.

Local Ferrari specialist (Manchester)

Have done some good work in the past (and a litte bit of not so good work). They work on plenty of high range/performance Ferrari's (F40/50's etc)

Good lad bow What month is your's? Mine's October 99 with 96,000 km so I'm right behind you!

Regards the OP’s question, apart from the F1 box upgrade I don't see why a late model car would handle any differently to an early model. Were there any significant brake or suspension upgrades during the model run?
