Hoping to sell my Diablo soon (plug! -see Armari), and always thought that I would end up with a 2004 Gallardo. But now with the arrival of the R8 I am having doubts as the same money (£85K) could buy me a new R8 which I could actually use every day. Am I going mad or is there any logic to my sudden confused state?

Buy whatever you think you will enjoy most.

Plus some people like to have a new car where possible rather than buy 2nd hand

But a G is a very useable sports car, everyday would be no problem.

Dont get me wrong - the G is the better car, but wht worries me is that the G will be 3years old whilst the R8 is brand new with 3 year warranty. Plus for resale you can put miles on the R8 but doing so on the G is not the market norm and hence will depreciate it more.

Leaving the brain at the door...

"So, what do you drive?"
"A Lamborghini."
"You lucky, lucky bastard!!!! That must be so cool to drive. Is it quick?"

or

"So, what do you drive?"
"An Audi."
"Oh... So how's the lawn? We've had a wet summer..."

So true! LOL

Its a bit like comparing the nice girl from accounts to a hot stripper from Spearmint Rhinos! One will be the sensible chioce taking you to nice cosy restuarants and buying you cufflinks for xmas whereas the other will bite your head off and empty your wallet faster than you can say boob job! Depending on your ££ situation, I'd know what I'd go for!!!!

But nice situation to be in!

If you're worried about resale a few years down the line, I wouldn't be betting money in this direction personally.

The R8 is a totally unknown quantity in so many respects. But I would think most people would bet against it in the "exotic car table of depreciation"...and who knows, the mileage sensitivity stupidity could take hold of the R8 too wink

I recon the R8 will be follow the 911 - i.e less exotic, more useable, less servicing costs, higher mileage being OK. The Audi name doesnt come close to Porsche, but it is much better looking. I actully saw a black one in Nice and head on it is very striking.

Now where have I heard that before lol....so true.

A lambo is more than the sum of it's parts..it's an experience, an orgasmic one at that!

Hi there,
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Here is a link to recent pics I took of the R8 in Winchester Cars which is parked in between a G SE & G Spyder!! IT's a difficult choice and I would struggle as the R8 is much rarer than the G's but a Lambo is a Lambo at the end of the day. Good luck with your decision and all the best!!

Thing is, the A5 looks striking head on too. Very similar in fact. And that's the point of the car wink

It'll be interesting to see how residuals go. If the car proves popular with those moving up from the likes of the A5, rarity will go out of the window once they get production properly geared.

There will be very few people lusting after a Lambo (or Ferrari or Aston etc) who will consider an R8 for more than half a second (if at all).

Ah, with women it's different. I'd take the nice girl from accounts. But I'd have a Gallardo not an R8.

I think both the R8 and the AMV8 are every day performance cars. Both the Ferrari and Lambos could be used the same way but may attract some unwanted attention and both would be devastated in value terms by higher mileages. In terms of service casts the R8 is very attractive - for say 10k miles per year full servicing costs, all maintenance , Tyres, Clutch etc on an Rtronic is around 1k per annum via an Audi maintenance plan. Personally I think the Gallardo is the most beautiful car on the Road at the moment, however I am put off a 2004 model year because of the lack of a Factory extended warranty. Both cars look good on the road. Don't believe that nonsense put around about the R8 being a big TT, it looks great in the metal. Fact is both have similar lineage under the skin, and AFAIK both the Gallardo and R8 Le Mans car were designed by the same guy Luc Donckerwolke.

They have a couple of R8s in huddersfield audi, they look okay in the flesh but pale into insignificance next to a Gallardo, this coming from a lifelong Fan f Audi's too smile

Buy a car for the love of it and the experience. Yes there are practical considerations but when it comes it to regardless of what you buy, a car is designed to be used, needs to be driven. The hell with how many miles you put on it - they are meant to be driven. Go with the one that makes you feel good and gives you the drive you want.

I totally agree Lambochick. But better to know what you are getting into financially with this breed of car before you jump in. If you can afford it go for it.

if you want sensible running costs/supercar then buy a 997 turbo.
r8 very awkward looking imo..especially side on...just an overgrown tt..keep hearing all the hype and all that keeps coming to mind is "the emperors new clothes" imoit will depreciate like big mercs and bmw's.

You shouldn't buy a car based on the name/brand. If the R8 drives as well as they say (get yourself a testdrive there's loads of demos about) then IMHO it'd be a tough call between the two.

997 TT residaals looking good right now, but give it a couple of years and they will do the same as the 996. Re the OP, spend 85k now on an 04 Gallardo and i guess it wil drop 10k in a year, spend the same on the R8 and i think you will be looking at closer to 20k ... same as the AMV8.. never a £90k car, worth 70 the moment you drive it away.
