Hi guys , thinking about purchasing a new or fairly new gallardo but was worried incase a new model will be introduced and so wondered about waiting. I intend on purchasing over the christmas period(with hope to getting a better deal if buying a used one)but didnt know whether people in the know are aware of a new gallardo to be introduced. The thing is im not bothered if the car just will get small changes as i know this is the norm but just dont want to shell out big time to discover 3 months later that i have bought a car that will be replaced by a totally new model . Any one aware of anything in the pipeline ? i mean its been 5 years now since the car was introduced!

Hi,

Im not sure but I did hear about the new Gallardo coming out in 2008. Thats what I heard from Tiff Needell when he reviewed the Superleggera.

I would wait until more information is released,

Sites like www.rsportscars.com have the latest news on all supercars.

The car is "rumoured" to be getting a power increase next year in the region of 10-15% along with some changes to the interior possibly involving more bespoke switchgear to replace the current Audi sourced items. List prices will no doubt be raised correspondingly.

There will indeed be a new car, MY'09 but launched late '08. It will have a bigger engine (still a V10), different induction and a few other, more minor tweaks.

The interior hasn't been finalised so anyone commenting is just guessing. Personally, I'd don't think it's going to be a huge leap on the current sombre cabin but expect a smattering of carbon and brushed ally. As the G is Sant'Agata's 'meat and two veg' car I don't think there's going to be anything too radical in the aesthetic department, all the money will be spent on what's under the skin (per the current model).

However... it will also be a fair bit more expensive. So anyone buying into a used model is unlikely to be affected by the newer car, as the cost of getting into a new G continues to escalate (as it should, it's worth every penny). The Gallardo has been something of a runaway success

In the same way the LP is now into silly money, so will the next gen Gallardo. I'd say residuals on used cars will be safe.

If you're really worried, buy a Fezza. They're always a safe bet. But who wants to play it safe?.

Good luck to you.

Is there really no end to the ability of these guys to increase the power/weight ratio

Just when you thought it was safe to buy a GallardoSL,
along comes the 430Scuderia,

now you are saying the new "standard" Gallardo (which I guess will be at Geneva in March) is going to be even faster

Anyway how are they going to get 600bhp out of that engine without using Turbos?

Ferrari are extracting a much higher bhp/litre ratio than Lamborghini. 493hp from 4.3 litres. Anything they can do, so can Lamborghini... if they needed.

Ferrari stick with a V8 because (aside from increasingly tenuous marketing reasons) frictional losses are lower (fewer main bearings, rings, etc, not to mention valvegear friction. Additionally, the crank is shorter, making a more compact engine. All of this begs the question "Why the hell is the 360 and 430 such a fat arsed bugger considering they've got such small engines?". A question for another time perhaps.

Trouble is, there is an optimal swept volume (for a variety of reasons) in a performance engine, and this is around 500cc. Hence the glut of 4 litre V8s, 5 litre V10s and 6 litre V12s (I'm well aware of the Z06 and Viper configuration but you can hardly accuse these of being state-of-the-art). So, with a high revving V8, Ferrari are pushing themselves a bit with the F430 TBH.

However, Sant'Agata's approach is going to be much safer. The tried and tested "stick a bigger engine in, Claudio" method, for a start. But not TOO much bigger. It just needs to keep ahead of Ferrari (Porsche don't count as Turbo charging is frowned upon at Lamborghini anyway and seen as a bit of a sticking plaster solution).

Ferrari's next step will be interesting though. In order to compete with the next generation Gallardo (let's face it, these two companies have NO other competition) they can't really just bore and stroke the existing V8. It won't be particularly efficient, and it won't rev. They're going to need a VERY light car... OR... a V10, or... turbos. And I can't see them adopting a V10.

Perhaps this is why Lambo went for the V10 originally. There's more scope for development. BMW have had to go the 'more cylinders' route and we've lost that magnificent straight 6. Ditto Porsche are dropping the 6 cylinder Boxer (atleast from the 911 variant) and adopting an 8 cylinder (and I can't wait to see how they package the thing).

So, far from wondering how Lamborghini are going to answer the challange (ahem) from Ferrari, I'm actually more keen to see Ferrari's eventual response to the next Gallardo.

There are a few engineering tricks left (including pneumatic valves, twin spark heads) but they are running out. Exotic materials are frighteningly expensive and it's difficult to predict service life. And there is something of a 'law of diminishing returns' when it comes to the electronics as well. The quantum leaps have been made IMO.

Certainly, we live in interesting times. And what better than to sit back and watch Maranello and Sant'Agata slug it out. Where are my slippers?

Anyhoo, Doug. No. It won't have forced induction.

ISTR there was a technical presentation at Ferrari a few months back, during the 60th Ani. weekend. The quote from the factory was that the engine had gone pretty much as far as it could, based on certain design decisions. Therefore, there was going to be more focus on lighter vehicles to get better bhp/kg ratios.

It would also allow the vehicle to be greener. Like that was ever a concern.

mikey,

The interior changes are speculative at this stage based upon various sources but it seems probable that this is an area where a mid life refresh would be most cost effective as significant changes to the bodywork would be costly to tool up for. I'd think it unlikely there will be any significant costly structural changes to the interior but a redesign of the centre console and nav units would seem an obvious possibility as these are proprietary components. And how can you say the interior is sombre? eek It's only sombre if it is all black wink
