Maserati 4200GT's looking good value
Discussion
Hi there, I am on the lookout for a Maserati 3200 or 4200 and have noticed that 4200's are looking good value compared to the 3200. The prices are moving a lot closer e.g. late (2002) 3200's are advertised for more than their equivalent 4200's. e.g. low £20k with similar mileage.
Any suggestions why? I can see a lot of advantages in getting a 4200, firstly that it doesn't have a cambelt is that right? Also the interior is better - Is the interior the same on both cars, I have only tested 3200's. from photos the 4200 looks slightly different - do they all have the big screen or just sat nav equipped cars? Overall I get the impression that it is a more sorted car, sound fair?

I think the 3200 has more of an iconic status than the 4200 - I think its fair to say that the 3200 saw Maserati return to form.
With regards to the interior, the 4200 is different to the 3200. A 4200 having a large screen doesn't necessarily mean it has Sat nav - this was an option - the screen, I believe, if for the Info Centre and is the same whether or not the car has Nav.
All the best

I agree that the 3200 is more of an icon, with the boomerang lights and exciting turbo power delivery. I would prefer one ideally, except there seems to be a lot of average examples out there. My thoughts were prompted by the appearance of a reasonable choice of good sounding 4200's - newer of course, with lower mileage/less owners and decent colour combos.
Do you think that a 4200 is cheaper to run long term? Is it true that the exhausts are sorted and the engine more reliable. Any economy improvements?

The exhausts and the engine for that matter are substantially different. You are correct that the 4200 has chains, not belts, which aids costs a little. All depends whether the scheduled (and any advisory) maintenance has been carried out when it should of. Plenty of 3200 with less than optimum service history out there now and some 4200 too.Do you think that a 4200 is cheaper to run long term? Any economy improvements are negligible.
Budget £1000 average annual maintenance plus faults on top, £1000 set of tyres every 8-12K miles, £1000 insurance plus road tax and you wont be far wrong...having had two 4200 myself.
Only reason I would consider a 3200 over the 4200 is the auto box option that the 4200 doesnt have.
The 3200 is considerably more economical in general day-to-day use due to it's turbo-charged engine, on motorway shleps I get 24 mpg without trying, which I think would be a struggle in a 4200.
Not really a car to buy if economy is high on your priority list but I do a lot of miles (for one of these) so I notice it.
The 4200 does seem cheaper to service - the 32 has a timing belt AND a chain, not the brightest of designs.... and although the engine isn't particularly fragile some of it's ancilliaries seem to be, but not on the 42. Having sorted the power unit of course they fitted the c-c box, which irrespective of whether you are a fan seems to be the 42's achilles heel, with F1 pumps failing, clutches toasting etc.
I would be wary of a "cheap" 4200 - it could still cost a lot to get right.
And it would have rubbish tail lights (joke!)

some examples - an 04 plate for £23k, now that is cheap.

Yeah but it has 53k on it - resale could be difficult (thinking of te exit strategy!).http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/MASE...
Thats been for sale for ages too. Originally advertised by a private seller (on here, I beleive) for that money a few months back.
Dave80s - I'm selling my 4200 at the moment, on PH in fact. I had been after a 3200 (the boomerang lights had me!), but general opinion is that the 4200 is a totally different ca in terms of reliability. I had 3 911's before I bought the Maser and so was a little wary about how it would compare. But the car has been 100% reliable, and this is experience of most people with the 4200.
Economy is not great - probably about 15mpg round town etc. but more on a run of course. I hope this next bit doesn't upset a lot of people, but interior and whole build quality is in a different league to the 3200 though.
Mine was in for it's annual service last month at Maranello and I wanted to renew the warranty as it expired then. Very annoyingly Maserati currently do not offer an extended warranty - they did when I bought the car, but due to "a recent change in FSA regs regarding motor manufacturer's underwriting their own insurance products blah blah blah" they can no longer offer one. Very annoying. A couple of sources have recommended a company called Warranty Wise - apparently it's about £1k for the 4200.
Anyway - bottom line is, if you feel the urge to have a Maserati (as I did) the do it, but choose wisely. The colour combination and mileage is very important on resale. I waited and waited until I got the one I wanted (dark metallic blue/ beige leather, with 18k on the clock when I bought it). Some slightly more unusual colour combos can look just as gorgeous, but may be harder to sell on. And mileage makes a BIG difference.
Get a good one and you will absolutely love it!
Good luck!
(ps; notice you had a couple of Delta Integrales' before - funnily enough that is on my hitlist of cars to try next!)

Well I sold my last Integrale about a year ago and I am wishing I had kept it!
Your car looks nice, shame it is out of my price range. Is yours what they call a 'facelift' model? What does that mean - just new alloys?
There is a 3200 on autotrader for 11.5k, could be tempted, that would leave me a fair few quid in the bank for running it. Anyone know this car (silver with 75k, a manual).

I believe the wheels were an update from 2003. The 2005 model, if thats what it is, was primarily cosmetic updates - bumpers, nose mesh and a couple of other bits. I believe there was a couple of internal updates and updates to the CC software too. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to give you a more definitive response.Your car looks nice, shame it is out of my price range. Is yours what they call a 'facelift' model? Agreed though, it does indeed look stunning.
LittleBro has covered it all there. It was the final revision they did to the 4200 - mostly cosmetic changes as described, but also includes the "Trident" emblem on the flanks above the rear wheels. Most important change really is to the gearbox software - they just tightened the whole thing up.
Sadly it looks as if I have a buyer for my car now,
and it may well be off on Thursday... I will be very sad to see it go, but needs must!

Enjoyed reading this thread. I wrote my 3200 off last weekend; gutted beyond belief.
Can I ask for your views on the Grandsport, not sure if I should go newer rather than search for a great 32oo replacement. Thanks

Sorry to hear that, hope everything works out ok and you can get into a Gransport..... (no d..)
I have the 4200 CC, and enjoy it enormously... I am considering one day moving up to the Gransport - according to a pal who has one (and replaced his earlier 4200) they are so much more sorted than the 4200!
I recently upgraded my 4200 wheels to the larger Gransport wheels (not the pics on profile.. I need to update them).... the car does look great with them on...
Cheers,
John
