Have noticed that when stationery too long in 1st, the car will switch back into neutral.
Also noticed it getting a bit smelly, when reversing a long way!

What is the lifespan on these latest generation (SuperL) clutches.. any tips to preserve, etc?

(Am coasting to standstill in neutral, when approaching traffic lights, etc)

Cheers
Rob

Some good points there!

I have hoofed it from a standstill, but not sure I will do it again. The horrible sickly aroma of deep fried clutch, was not pleasant.. eek

Also the multi point turn, is a def no no!

It will only switch to N if you haven't got your foot on the brake

With both e-gear and F1 this is meant to be a really bad idea - if you are not moving either keep your foot on the brake or put it in N

Hi Rob,
I'm road testing a SL @ Birmingham tomorrow. I'll try this out on there car to see if it does the same? My 04 manual car had an E spec clutch 4/5,000 miles ago and has been faultless since!! Must say I'm not sure how I'm gonna get on with an E gear car? Had an M3csl a few years ago and felt that the smg gearbox took away a lot of the pleasure/skill in driving it!! (Didn't stop me putting it in a ditch a couple of times)laughlaughlaugh But i always say that was due to Pilot cup tires and a lot of rainrolleyesrolleyes

into asking why does mickken keeps on making innuendo-laded comments about Gallardos?

Could it be because he had experienced a few bad moments, (obviously clutch related), with his own Gallardo and so feels the need to try to ruin anybody else's experience of them somehow?

The best tip?................

"next time buy the manual!"

Sorry! I know the SL only comes in flappy paddles but personally I much prefer the tactile delight of swapping cogs myself.

Must say i agree 100% But for some reason no one specs SL's with manual!!! Properly due to the fact that manual cars apparently are worth less then E gears! Progress apparently!! God i sound like an old farteekeekeek

Yeah - so "spend £7k more at order and it will be worth £4k more at resale time" What? - if the pricing differential is maintained at resale you havent lost anything surley?

I love my manual Murcie - no way I will be speccing a e-gear for it's replacement! Pal of mine searched long and hard to find a manual Lambo and ended up paying similar money to a same spec e-gear - so i don't quite follow the argument?

Just interested to see what level of quality other expect. The Lambo in general falls way way below what I expect in a high end car. It was a bad moment from day one when 5 cylinders kept shutting down. (Sean told me it was something to do with electronics in the wheel arch not being properly water proofed) Door handle kept falling off (inside drivers side). Front bonnet would leak terribly. I got a few 1000mls out of my first couple of clutches too...no interest. (I had to pay for these, 5k each, as Lambo were denying the quality) Are they now replaced under warranty?

It was a very early one though, one of the first in the UK, so if these "quirks" have been sorted , i'll shut the fcuk up??
It's always risky being the owner of an early model, particularly from a low volume manufacturer, as you will inevitably experience more issues. Most people on forums seem to resent this and feel like they are being used for final development testing but the truth is that a low volume manufacturer like Lambo simply does not have the financial resources to do the sort of rigorous development miles that a high volume manufacturer would put on a car. Having said that with model development cycles being drastically reduced due to the increased use of simulated computer testing there are more cars suffering early production issues. As consumers we are partly to blame here as we always want the latest toy and it must be laden with the newest gadgets. Most early production models from BMW and Merc have had quality issues in the last few years and the internet has given rise to a greater perception of "problems" as forum users are now aware of fellow sufferers whereas 10 or 15 years ago warranty issues were rarely made public by manufacturers.

I'm on my second Gallardo and both have been very well built (far better than the 360 I had before) and, touch wood, suffered none of the problems you mentioned. Everyone I've had in the cars has actually remarked on how good the quality is.

Hi Rob. Superleggera clutch will certainly be stronger than mine. My C clutch is still the original and I've put 17,500 miles on it, with a 50% wear indicated by the OBD. I also have had the horrible "clutch stench" a couple of times without adverse effect (although I was quite worried at the time!).
NEO got over 40,000 out of his E clutch, again an E-gear car. Your SL will have the E clutch fitted (sintered was for '06 onwards manuals only).

The only way to understand E-gear is to drive it, which is why it's unpopular with first-timers on a test drive. It doesn't reward you untill you know what you're doing.

Next time you're out you should notice that the rate of clutch engagement is proportional to the rate at which the throttle is applied. If you're very gentle with the throttle the clutch engages slowly, more firmly and the clutch follows suite. If you are ultra-aggressive, the clutch will dump very quickly but the driveline inertia will dictate that instead of getting drive you'll get massive clutch slip instead, hence the stink. Dicking about reversing, or doing protracted 3-point turns can certainly give the clutch a harder time.

The trick with E-gear is to be assertive so that the car knows what you're trying to do, but only muller it once the thing is moving. If you give some to get off the line smartish and then really get on the gas you will feel the clutch engage more agressively without knackering it.

It's a bit of a juggling act, that only time in the car can teach I'm afraid.

But you needn't worry about the clutch. It really is a strong bugger and only the desperately unlucky (which you can do nothing about) or the heavy-handed (which you can) are going to suffer unduly.

Sermon over. Happy motoring. laugh

Some interesting points there.. Agree you need to learn the car, to get the most form the E-gear.
The car is tricky at low speeds, in traffic. But once you get it up to speed, the whole package really gels!

I love it, it really is a special machine. Whenever you go for a little blatt, you get a major fix! biggrin

I concur with this.

Mone was a mid 04 car. Power steering pump failure shaft packs up twice, engine cut out so many times and the clutch despite being the updates version was replced twice over 4K miles and then the RMS as well.
Numerous rattles from the dash, trip drops off on drivers door, rear lights melting inside the relectors.
All in all very disspointing- and then when you come to sell it you get bids that frighten the life out of you.
Things maybe better on 06 cars on- but resale is as bad as any marque one can think off
