Maseratis - Views on reliability?
Discussion
Considering the granturismo versus the XKR. There is a small price difference in the favour of the XKR, but what is actually swaying me more in this direction is perception of reliability. I have this idea that a Jag would be more reliable day to day. Are these views supported or should I bite the bullet and go with the arguably better looking granturismo?
Have driven a 4200 Coupe for the last 2 years as a daily driver without any real problems. From anecdotal evidence I am not sure that Jags are any more reliable. The one word of advice I would give is that I think one of the reasons my maser has been relatively trouble free is that I do use it every day, they do not appear to like being left unused for any length of time.
I still enjoy getting into it the Maser every time (really!) and am not sure you would get the same feeling from a Jag, nice car though it is. Just do it, you won't regret it!

Had small minor issues with the 3200GT. Regret getting rid of it as it seemed very reliable. Most complaints where with the garage. They did however sort it out once pressed. I am after a sports car now as apposed to a GT. Would recommend one without any hesitation if your up for a GT. (GT is not a bad thing, just need somthing more edgy)
Just look at how the QP is holding it's value. The GranTurissmo os on the same platform. If the reliability issues (a perception of 80's de tomaso owned maserati) held any water then the QP would be 25k by now, not stilll knocking around at 40k+.
A Maserati will cost more to run than a jag - iot's much lower volume so parts will cost more, but it is a new car built by Ferrari, not an XK8 in a new bodyshell.
I know which way I'd go!

Cheers chaps.
Agree that the Maser would still keep me happy. Definitely more of a looker than the XKR, and im not fussed about the GT S that much. Used to have a 911, now have an RRS, so the plain GT will have enough performance i think
Test driving on saturday, where I also hope to get a good butchers round the 575, possibly the other contender (although lack of gadgets and rear seats would be an issue)
Pants, just seen a lovely 04 white gallardo on the Egham website for similar money to a GT... Who needs internal space!!

No point in comparing a production line "Ford" in drag, with an Italian Stallion built with passion, tinged with a bit of personality... Have now owned my Maserati 4200 CC for nearly 3 years. Nothing major gone wrong.. (although may be tempting Italian gods of fate with that statement)...
Servicing costs c/o Dick Lovett are average. Also I got rear seats .. try fitting four in a "Jagwar" You gotta do it at least once in your life & cherish the joy of driving a real car, rather then own a mere motor..

lol I had the same dilemma, I turned 30 a couple of weeks ago & end of last year I was looking for something a bit more exciting to replace the S4 with.. Looked at the new XKR, lovely car but felt I was a tad too young to be stepping into a jag, no matter how well screwed together. Ended up with a Maserati gransport, it's lovely car & really easy to live with (I use it as daily hack) it was good value for money (well I feel it was), was the perfect colour, interior, all the options I wanted. Took a while to find the right on though.
Test drive em back to back & pick which one you like. The granturisimo is a stunning car if a little slow

had previously driven the xkr a while back when someone had driven into the back of me, so know it has oodles of power etc etc
The cabin of the GT just felt far more special, if thats the right word. And the looks of it IMO are leagues ahead of the XKR. Didnt really get a chance to stretch its legs but there is no arguing that for day to day driving and cruising there is power by the boat load and is certainly sufficient.
I think i can justify in my mind the premium to get into the GT, so thats the current plan

Apart from the knackered speak/sub, knackered satnav, skipping at full lock, trim that was put on to tight, fuel popper that didnt pop, eratic start, dodgey seatbelt mine was fine!
I had one of the first so expected these issues. Oncec in to the dealership they sorted them immidiatly and were very sorry i had to deal with these. Now she runs fine although shes being a bit of a garage queen at the moment to be fair as i have an untrained malamute puppy. Im out in the uae at the moment and i have a friend here that has a massive high end service place. Hes saying the new jags are s
te out here and that they just cant stand up to what dubai has to throw at them, they keep on breaking down due to heat/lesser refined fuel/mad driving styles while the masers just need the injectors cleaned more regularly! I suppose its just a sign on the strength of the package.
The cars got me lost got me annoyed but its never got me stranded! (touch wood)
ps its the better looking out of the 2 i thinkthe black with red goes well and get the birdcage wheels the other ones dont compare in my opinion.
